A great player and very enlightened man who represents all that is positive about the much maligned West of Scotland culture. Wish there were more like him around these days. Celtic's success has always stemmed from embracing all strands of Scottish society.

I have a pic of the programme for this match played at Easter Road on Sunday 30 April 1978; the game finished 2-1 to Hibs.
How do I make a new page?

Does anyone know anything about Willie Murdoch who played with Celtic as a Goalkeeper in the early 1960s. He later played for Queens Park, Motherwell, and Forres Mechanics in the Highland League, and was capped for Amateur Scotland on several occasions while at the 3 previously mentioned clubs. In later life he became an actor and died in 2011 at 69. There is no mention of him in The Celtic Wiki as having played in the first team, or not having played in the first team at all.

Are you sure you that you have got the title of the trophy correct?
I always believed it to be The Daily Express 5-a-side trophy. I was there the night they won it and remember Charlie Nicholas had a marvellous evening. Neil MacDonald, Gateshead

I was there. The turning point was probably when Kai Johansen (who had scored the only goal of the 1966 Cup Final in which I thought Bertie Auld had his best game for Celtic) hit a penalty against a post and instinctively kicked the rebound. Referee Tiny Wharton rightly whistled up for a foul, as the ball must be touched by another player before the penalty-taker can do so again. This game was on the same night as the final episode of the black-and-white TV series The Fugitive (David Janssen) was broadcast. In the days before video recorders etc, so spectators missed the tv finale.

Thanks to everyone who contacted me regarding my Mastermind attempt. Yes the questions were "easy" but try answering them in the black chair and see how "easy" they are.

I've been perplexed about this one and have made an entry on the celtic Graves site.
Firstly the roof fall at GREENRIG pit is not traceable on the date noted - either through the Scottish Mining Archives or through the newspaper archives. There IS a mention of a RUSSELL killed in a pit suffocation in a Fauldhouse pit but from a different year. Now the newspaper archive to the death on the 8 November 1952 at Fauldhouse is very definite and in more than one entry. I am inclined to think thatb thwere has been some wrong archiving here and there is a cross-link. I think the 1952 date is probably correct and that the mine collapse and crush is wrong as I cannot trace it at all.

The article about Jimmy notes the few Scottish caps awarded to him and avoids commenting on this. Well, as someone who viewed Jimmy as possibly the best Scottish football player in the Seventies, I have long felt that his restricted selection for the Scotland team was influenced by sectarian feeling in the selectors and in the West of Scotland generally. A special problem for me, festering for 39 years, was Jimmy's non-selection at the German World Cup, 1974, after a master class against England a month before. The team we had then, with the addition of Jimmy Johnstone, could have progressed to the next round and given us what we do not have now - happy memories of that or any other World Cup. The bigoted selectors and (team manager?) deprived the nation of the exhilaration and joy of progress in a major tournament. It left us as a minor player in World football, the country that created the modern game. Is it to late to prosecute?
Finally, most Scots do not realise that Scotland, particularly Glasgow, developed the way that football was played and how it became a spectacle watched by thousands in stadiums created by a Scottish architect, Archibald Leitch. The SFA History story at Hampden Park does not do justice to Scotland as the 'Home of Football', despite what other nations may say!

Ian Is a friend of mine and when I emailed him your photo, he was delighted.
Here is Ian's reply-: Thanks Pat I bet you say that to all the fullbacks you know. The pictures were of great interest to me. The one of me on the goal line and the ball high in the air has a question above it asking if it was my own goal in the cup final. I was actually clearing it off the line, saving a certain goal. My own goal glanced off my head and was going in any way ( thats my story and I'm sticking to it). Thanks again Ian He still has a great love for Celtic and has finished a book called "Life with the Lions." I am trying to get him to call it "The Lion that never Roared". Ian is a gentleman with modesty to match except when it came to a 50 50 tackle.

Thanks for your message. The Celtic Grave Society have identified Bertie's grave (which has a cracking headstone in good nick) in Elderslie. A couple of our members have some more background information and pictures also.
Our thread on Bertie is here: http://celticgraves.com/topic/8173281/1/#new It has report on the impressive turnout of Celtic supporters for Bertie's funeral. Come and join our forum, introduce yourself and we'll be delighted to help you find our more information. Anything more we find we'll then put back on the Wiki here for everyone to enjoy.
