My old man was at the 1969 cup final as well as a few others with crowds of well over 100 000. He always maintains that the huns always had the bigger support - about an additional 15-20000 fans in comparison to the Celtic support. However, I understand that the old celtic end was significantly bigger than the rangers end. Would this not have equalised the support to some extent? Considering that Celtic can when successful attract crowds of 58,000, I find it hard to believe that Rangers would have had such a larger contingent given the success of Celtic during that period. Can anyone enlighten?

You're quite right to query this, after all Celtic had 136,000 at the match against Leeds Utd in April 1970. However, there were many neutrals including Rangers fans at that match. (My papa was one of them!) The Celtic end of old Hampden was considerably bigger than the Rangers end. At the very back of the terracing there was an additional thirty steps or so. This could be done at the Celtic end because there was no shed getting in the way unlike other parts of the ground. The Rangers end was under cover (always a sore point with Celtic fans) so an 'extension' at their end was impossible. Standing at the rear of the Celtic end in old Hampden, a fan would have been about 200 yards from the opposing goal!
