From newspaper reports from the time

The Scotsman - Monday, 6th October 1890,

These teams met on Byreknowes Park, Carfin in this replayed Scottish Cup tie. The previous week the teams drew 2 goals each in the second round round of the Scottish ties, and this match caused great excitement. There was an enormous crowd of spectators round the ropes, and when the teams stepped into the arena both were received with loud and continuous cheering. The Celts won the toss, and Carfin kicked off. They attempted to make a rush at their opponents' goal, but McKeown repelled. The ball was then taken to within measurable distance of the Shamrock fortress, and with a fine shot Dowds sent it through. This was repeated shortly after by the ball being sent between the posts by Carson. The second half was, if anything, characterised by rather more dash than the first. The Celts pressed hard, but it was not to be, as time after time the brothers Pearsonrepelled excellent attempts made by Dowds and others to increase their score, but ultimately the visitors scored the first goal of the second half. The Shamrock then had their only experience of the day in the matter of goal scoring. Breslin took the ball from his own goal, ran it past all and sundry, passing McKeown nicely, and finished by defeating bell. the game finished thus, and proved the Celts to be, by 2 goals, the superior team of the two.
Result:- Carfin Shamrock 1 goal; Celtic 3 goals.
