Report 1

The Scotsman – Monday, 20th October 1890

Both clubs were strongly represented. The game was half-an-hour late in starting, the Celtic being delayed on the way from Glasgow.. In the first half the visitors played down the incline , with a light wind in their face and the sun in their eyes. Groves kicked off and Watt immediately pass to Lindsay, who had an unsuccessful run up the field. A free kick fell to the Celtic near the Wishaw goal, but the ball was shot past. Play now changed quickly from end to end, and a scrimmage in front of the Wishaw goal looked dangerous, but nothing came of it. A couple of corners also fell to the visitors, but without good result. About 20 minutes after the start Dowds with a lightening shot opened the scoring. Again the Celtic forwards bore down on the home goal, and in a few minutes Madden put on a second point for the visitors, who were leading by 2 goals to 0 when ends were crossed. In the second half the Celtic forwards took the ball up the field immediately on resuming, and Campbell, with a long shot from the left, put on goal number 3. the Celts continuing the pressure Madden scored another. Miller unsuccessfully attempting to stop the shot with his foot. The smart play of the visitors quite nonplussed their opponents, and in the excitement of the moment one of the Wishaw team kicked the ball through his own goal, thus raising the Celtic’s total to 5. After this Wishaw pulled together a bit, and Naughton with a swift short scored their first goal amid cheers. the Thistle again pressed, and got another point, Bell being defeated by Lyle. This success encouraged the local men to increased efforts and the game became fast and exciting. Reynolds and McKeown, however, were making a splendid defence, and were almost impassable. It was now the visitors’ turn to press, and a free kick fell to them well up the field, following upon which they registered their sixth goal.
No further scoring took place, and the game ended:- Celtic 6; Wishaw Thistle, 2.
