  • Before 5,000 spectators.
  • The match was ended early and a replay was ordered.

  • Celtic’s appointed umpire (linesman) for the day was Tom Maley (each side in those days appointed a linesman).
  • After a Larkhall player named Frame fouled Celtic player Johnny Madden, Tom Maley (the linesman!) punched Mr Frame! There were just 2 policeman at the match to quell any trouble, and after a struggle they managed to deal with the subsequent pitch invasion, but following subsequent thuggery on and off the pitch, the referee was compelled to abandon the first game which Celtic were winning 4-0.
  • A replay was ordered and Celtic won that 2-0, played at Ibrox!

Review

The Scotsman – Monday, 8th December 1890, page 10

Royal Albert v Celtic – This Scottish Cup tie was played at Larkhall, in presence of nearly 5000 spectators. The Celts scored the first point shortly after commencement of the game, and keeping up the pressure, soon added another two points to their credit. The house team’s play improves towards the close of the first half, but they failed to score. On change of ends, play was more even, and each goal was assailed in turn. Ten minutes before time a slight accident occurred, and a rush by the spectators prevented the game being completed.
