Glasgow Charity Cup Presentation
Donations to Charity
The Charity Football Cup was formally presented to the Celtic Club yesterday afternoon in the Council Chambers, George Square. Bailie Paton presided, and there were also present Bailie's J H Martin, Graham, Brechin, and Bilsland, Councillor Campbell and ex-provost Browne, Crosshill.
Bailie Paton, in making the presentation, expressed regret at the absence of the Lord Provost, who was unable to be present. he expressed the pleasure it gave him to fulfil this duty which had been imposed upon him by the Magistrates.
he mentioned that since the institution of the Charity Cup £12,000 had been distributed among various charities. This year the record had been fully maintained, inasmuch as over £1,000 had been distributed among the charities, (Applause).
The Celtic Club had this year won the Scottish Challenge Cup, The Glasgow Challenge Cup, and the Charity Cup. They were all pleased to see that the game of football had taken such a hold on the youth of the country, and they were especially pleased that a large part of the proceeds were devoted to charitable purposes, (Applause).
Mr Nelis, in accepting the trophy on behalf of the club, remarked that it was peculiarly appropriate that the Cup should have been won by the Celtic, a club whose very raison d'etre was charity.
