Match Report

From a Newspaper Report at the time

This holiday match was played at Celtic Park, Parkhead, and attracted about 20,000 spectators. Sunderland did not play their full League team, but the reserves were considered quite as good. Celtic were without Kelly, Doyle and Dowds.
The game was very fast from the start, and Sunderland, after five minutes’ play, scored the first goal of the match. The Celts played extremely hard to neutralise Sunderland’s attack, but the Sunderland team were far too smart on the ball for the opposing defence, and they soon scored a second goal by one of the two wing-backs.
Godchild, who partnered Harvey on the right, is the first English lad who has played for Sunderland, and he hails from a junior team called Ryhope.
The Celts defence was overmatched, and Scott added a third goal, all being taken within twelve minutes, and then McMahon scored for the Celts, the result of severe pressure on the Sunderland goal. The Celts’ play improved vastly as the game progressed, and they had really as much of it as their opponents.
At Half-Time Sunderland led by 3 goals to 1.
The second was evenly contested, and it says a lot for Sunderland that with five or six of their best men absent they showed such good football.
For the Celts Maley, as centre-back played grandly, and Kelly was not missed. McMahon scored a grand goal for the Celts, making the second, and the excitement increased, there being a prospect of equalising. There was no further scoring, however, and the game ended in favour of Sunderland by 3 goals to 2.
