Trivia

CLYDE DEFEATED AT PARKHEAD

CELTIC, 2; CLYDE. 1

Celtic yesterday-took another step towards winning the Championship by defeating Clyde at Parkhead, and the loss of points placed the Shawfield club in an exceedingly dangerous position.

Owing to the strong wind, play was often of a scrappy nature but it was keen, quick, and often clever, and the 15,000 spectators who attended had every reason to be pleased.

Playing with the wind during the first-half Celtic took the lead in ten minutes through Delaney, but they were by no means convincing, and Clyde received no more than they were due when they equalised five minutes before the interval. McCulloch gathering a wide pass to cut in and beat Kennaway.

Previous to this however, they had failed to convert a penalty kick, Morrison having handled when falling in his endeavour to clear a cross by McCulloch.

The winger took the spot kick but struck the cross-bar and Kennaway cleared successfully as the ball came down.

McGRORY’S WINNING GOALS

Celtic were more comfortable facing the wind; it appeared to assist them in controlling the ball.

They had the most of the play after the interval, and in 17 minutes McGrory got through to beat Stevenson.

The centre had several opportunities to add to his total but was out of luck, although on one occasion he obviously refused to accept an opening rather than take the chance of injuring Stevenson, who was lying on the ground, a gesture which was duly appreciated by the spectators.

Rankine sustained an injury 20 minutes after the restart, and was taken off, but he was able to resume. Later, Delaney sustained an injury.
Celtic were the better side in the second half, but their left-wing was not too satisfactory, Murphy being very careless, while Crum passed badly.

Paterson was their best middleman and the backs and Kennaway were seldom in trouble.

Stevenson played well in the visitors' goal, but was fortunate oh at least two occasions 3 when he failed to cut but crosses.

Woods was a strong defender, and Beaton and Mayer combined splendidly with their forwards, of whom Rankine, until he was forced to retire, was outstanding.
