Trivia

  • First game of the 1951-52 League Cup. celtic were drawn in a group with Third Lanark, Morton and Airdrieonians.
  • On Saturday August 4th, 1951, Celtic, as was usual prior to the start of every season proper, held a trial for players that had been asked along. This season the player they wanted to watch was a certain "Giles Herron (sic)….. a coloured 23 year old Jamaican" who Celtic had been told about during the tour of America at the end of the previous season and had invited to come to Scotland to try out. Giles had flown in from Detroit. He was signed by the club after the trial on the 5th August.
  • Some controversy in the last minute of the game. Third Lanark were given a free kick for offside 30 yds from there goal. Aitken the left back passed the ball back towards the goalkeeper and Fallon chased the ball down and with nobody attempting to close him down, walked the ball into the net. Third Lanark then proceded to retake the kick till Bobby Evans complained to the referee and claimed the goal. The referee idsallowed it saying he had not blown his whistle for the free to be taken.
  • Jock Weir and John McPhail were out injured at the start of the season.

Review

A fairly poor game where the crowd were more interested in discussing the referee's poor decisions than commenting on the game. Fallon headed the Celtic goal from a cross after Tully dummied his marker to make space.
