Trivia

  • Celtic were drawn in a group with Hibernian, St Mirren and Partick Thistle.
  • Debut game for John McDonald. Despite 2 goals in 2 appearances (scored in the next game) he would go out on loan to Kilmarnock in November then on to Leith Athletic in December of this year with many people disappointed that he failed to show the promise that had been seen in him in the Reserves. Sympathisers could argue he deserved more chances, and had proven himself in part with two goals in two games.
  • St Mirren played their new goalkeeper Pirrie, who had arrived in the closed season from Bradford, as well as two ex-'gers Williamson and Duncanson

Review

Seen as an 'experimental' Celtic forward line-up. John McDonald was promoted to the senior team as centre forward with support from McPhail and Tully and with Peacock and Jock Weir on the wings.

Celtic went into the lead in the 6th minute when McDonald dispossessed Pirrie and stroked the ball home.
