Trivia

  • Newcastle Utd's first full floodlit match saw Celtic travel south for a Friendly which was a return leg of the game im xxxx when Newcastle travelled north for a Friendly in which the teams shared the spoils and six goals.

Review

An excellent game by all accounts where Celtic matched the Englisg cup holders for skill, craft and pace. Celtic had three claims for penalties in the second half. The referee was tolerant of a pushing and elbowing style of tackling "….which has become unfortunately associated with many teams in English football". Fernie missed with four close range shots in the first half. jackie Milburn made both goals for Robledo though the second appeared to be offside.
Mike Haughney gave a confident display. Meechan and Stein appeared most troubled by the floodlights and the two wing halfs had poorer games due to the comparative failure of the inside forwards. Leter in the game Bobby Collins switched inside and joined up with Tully. Tully was in exhibition form. Only poor finishing and excellent goalkeeping from Ronnie Simpson kept Celtic goal-less.
