Trivia

  • Willie Maley Testimonial
  • [Willie Maley Biog] [Manager Pics]
  • Joe Baillie's first game back since twisting his knee the previous season. The Murphy in the Celtic team did not make a full senior debut. He came originally from Blantyre Celtic and was on the books as a Celtic part-timer and had played in the pre-season trial of Probables against Possibles.

Review

Celtic had never played a testimonial for Willie Maley and had always been meaning to do so. Willie Maley himself kicked off the game and was still an active 85 year old and contributed the occasional column to the Evening Times. The proceeds raised from the game were intended to be given as a donation from the man himself to the Grampian Sanatorium, Kingussie. Bohemians scored first from a penalty after a barge from Bonnar. They then proceeded to hold Celtic well through the first half. In the second half it was a different story, with Celtic scoring 9 goals to no reply. Murphy was said to be a slightly built winger with a good turn of speed who Collins kept on playing in and who was thought to be able to challenge for a place in the team in the coming season. Willie Maley himself likened him to a young Jimmy Delaney - high praise indeed!

Charlie missed a lot of this season through injury, returning only at the end to seal the Cup and League double. Celtic's team looks like Bonnar, Haughney, Rollo, Evans, Stein, Baillie, Collins, Fernie, Hemple, Peacock, Mochan. Sam Hemple had a run of four games as centreforward about a month after this game.

HenryClarson Maley, McGrory and Stein together? 2 Aug 16 2010, 1:10 AM EDT by HenryClarson

That's a remarkable photograph. I think I'm right in identifying Jock Stein sitting in the front row beside Willie Maley in the centre while Jimmy McGrory is at the far left. That means that all of the men who managed Celtic (in official competitions, at least) from 1897 until 1978 are pictured together here.
And since Maley played for the club from 1888 onwards, we can actually see a through line of 90 years of Celtic service.
A truly historic photo.
