Trivia

  • Tully and Jimmy Walsh were out injured and Eric Smith came in at inside left and John McPhail was asked to play at outside left. This gave Celtic the ability to switch Mochan and McPhail if things didn't happen the way they wanted.
  • Celtic Reserves played Rangers Reserves the night before. The Celtic team was McCreadie; Ryan, Meechan; MacKay, Jack, Conroy; Craig, Rowan, Docherty, Sharkey, Auld. They lost 2-3 with Bertie Auld getting both the Celtic goals.

Review

A memorable win at Ibrox.

Injuries to Walsh and Tully had set a challenge to the team selection. Rangers also had their problems and it proved the selection of Baird at left half was the crucial error as he had a defensive nightmare and was involved in a crude challenge on Fernie that left the inside forward limping and out on the right wing. The gain from this was Collins moving to inside right and he played a blinder all game.

The first goal came from McPhail who beat Caldow and lofted the ball over Niven's head. Twelve minutes later Smith scored from a Mochan pass. Rangers pulled one back when Fallon and Scott collided the ball breaking off Fallon and past Bonnar. Smith then scored a superb goal when set up by a McPhail pass. He beat Baird and sent a terrific shot in from 22 yards which Niven could do nothing about. Mochan added his usual trademark rocket in the second half.
