Trivia

  • Sean Fallon was back fit and started at left back, Meechan switching to the right side; in a last minute switch Eric Smith dropped out and McVittie came in at centre forward with Walsh moving out on on the left hand side; Tully was still unfit.
  • St Mirren had ex-Celtic Jimmy Mallan at left back. Their outside left, Ally McLeod had just transferred to St Mirren from Third Lanark (in a purely financial move for the Cathkin club who had parted with their manager and trainer and were selling the furniture in an attempt to make ends meet in Division B).
  • This game was played in fog which had affected much of the central belt for the whole of the previous game and had caused the abandonment of the midweek floodlit game in Edinburgh between Hibernian and Newcastle Utd.
  • Collins, Walsh and Fernie had all played for a Glasgow representative city side against a Sheffield representative side in a 2-1 loss to 10 men in Sheffield on 16th November.
  • The Scottish Magistrates met with the Federation of Senior Scottish Football Associations to work up a concerted plan – or rather they didn't meet as it was impossible to find a mutually convenient date , but the FSSFA submitted their plan to the Magistrates meeting. They called for the full powers of the magistrates to be thrown at the rowdies that were arrested at games, they asked for the banning of all flags, banners and other emblems from inside grounds and barring those carrying the said items from the grounds. They also asked that footballers involved in incidents be suspended without pay immediately. Those who had appeared before the baillies this season had generally ended up getting the jail!

Review

The game started slowly but on 10 minutes Mochan sent a rasper just wide of the post and from that point on Celtic were on the attack. Their first goal however came from an error from the St Mirren goalkeeper. Telfer passed back to his goalie but beat Lornie and with the ball coming back off the post but Fernie collected the ball and lobbed one towrds the goal. Lornie in collecting it managed to fall over the goal line and into the goal. Sharkey's goal in the second half was an excellent piece of close quarter ball control which had Telfer, the St Mirren centre half beaten three times before the young centre forward despatched the ball past Lornie from 18 yards. Mochan's goal came when he collected a clearance and cooly lobbed the goalkeeper having beaten a sluggardly St Mirren defense.
