Trivia

  • Believed to be the last time Kilmarnock won at Celtic Park (for over 50 years); Kilmarnock were managed by Malky MacDonald and featured ex-Celts Alex Rollo and Willie Toner.
  • Michael Haughney was again fit and came back in at right back; Mike was an ex-commando and captain of the Seaforth Highlanders
  • Michael Conroy the Celtic left half was a part-timer, and got the game ahead of Frank Whyte.
  • Willie Fernie had scored 5 goals against Queen of the South in January 1955. The first 3 were disallowed by the referee so he deliberately walked the last two into the net and challenged the referee to chalk them off!
  • John Higgins was fit again also and came into the left wing slot with Bobby Collins moving to inside right.
  • Jim Sharkey, the Celtic centre-forward went on to become porter at Pembroke College, Cambridge.
  • During the previous week the Management Committee of the Scottish League met to discuss the playing of competitive games under floodlight. The League were generally against it and considered that it would take money away from the Saturday gate which was the main income source of clubs. A European Cup tie had already been played under lights in Glasgow at Firhill when Hibernian met Djurgardens. There were also floodlights at Ibrox and Shawfield by this time. Celtic however were intent on the improvement of the covering of the terraces before venturing into what was at that time an unknown area.
  • The draw for the fifth round of the Scottish Cup was made with Celtic drawing Morton away. The clash of the round however was Rangers against Aberdeen at Ibrox with all the ties due to be played on February 4th.
  • Bobby Evans and Bobby Collins played for Scotland against an Army team under floodlights at Shawfield on 7th December with Scotland winning 3-1, with Collins getting the third goal.
  • Also during this week the club dismissed George Patterson as coach to the first team. He had been at Celtic Park since 1952. This followed a 'difference of opinion' with the management.
  • The Reserves beat Kilmarock reserves 2-1 at Rugby Park. The team was Bonnar, Fletcher, Goldie, McPhail, Stein, Duffy, Craig, McVittie, McAlindon, Ryan, Auld. A miserable wet day had seen snow fall in other parts of Scotland.

Review

Killie took a two goal lead by half time with goals from Curlett in the 4th and 38th. Celtic had good efforts to level the score with Rollo having to clear off the line. Despite good attempts by Celtic the Killie defense held firm and they were ever dangerous on the break. It was an uphill fight for Celtic and Killie proceeded to hold out against an onslaught for the rest of the game. Celtic's first home defeat of the season.
