Trivia

  • Sean Fallon and Bobby Collins were both back in full training but not considered ready yet for a full first team game. John Higgins was fit though and returned to the right wing but Tully was out and Mochan went back to the left with Jim Sharkey coming in at centre forward. Frank Meechan also made way for Jim Kennedy.
  • In world affairs Sir Anthony Eden heeded the call and stepped down as Prime Minister. Harold McMillan took over as PM and eader of the Conservative party. The clamour for Eden's resignation had been building ever since he was forced to take complete rest in Jamaica in the midst of the Suez crisis which he by and large had precipitated. Eden went on to resign his seat in parliament and retire from political life.

Review

Celtic had some good openings and shots in the first 15 minutes with Sharkey in particular starting well. But it was Motherwell that scored first. Sammy Reid beat Haughney and crossed for Gardiner to shoot home from ten yards. Celtic came right back and Haughney made no mistake from the spot when Higgins was pushed over in the box. Cat and mouse followed all over the park for the rest of the half to leave it at evens at half time. Mochan had a good attempt just after the restart and on 55 minutes Peacock crossed for Jim Sharkey, who was having an excellent game at centre forward, to score with a header. Motherwell put the pressure on the Celtic goal but Celtic still looked dangerous on breakaways.
A good game in the end with some decent football played and Celtic's first win of 1957.
