Trivia

  • Alec Byrne came in for Billy McPhail at centre forward and McAlindon replaced John Higgins on the right wing. This was Alec Byrne's senior debut and he would go on to make 100 first team appearances for Celtic whilst continuing to work as a shipyard worker at Greenock.

Review

Both teams started well with Collins having chances at one end and Bonthrone and Stewart at the other. The Bhoys had the ball in the net on the 30th minute but Byrne was adjudged offside. At half time in remained goal-less. East Fife came out determined to score and score they did in a concerted move which saw a Stewart shot come back off the upright and Gillon was there to put away the rebound. Celtic were under heavy pressure in the second half and stood out until the seventieth minute when Matthew, who had come on to a game in the second half, popped in the second.
