Review

A game similar to the first in that Celtic attacked and attacked and Kilmarnock defended. This time however Celtic were wastefu in front of goal and Kilmarnock came out of their shell more and were prepared to go for the win. The Celtic defense in truth was utter mince and Beattie was to a degree at fault for each of the goals and by the end was a nervous wreck.

Celtic won the toss and kicked off with the strong wind in their favour. A good move from Byrne saw Higgins head over when he should have scored. Kilmarnock scored first when Jack sclaffed a clearance high in the air and Beattie failed to reach in when going for the ball then impeded Curlett going for it. The referee awarded the panalty and though Beattie saved the shot from Mays be could not keep out the rebound.

Ten minutes later Celtic pulled level when a combined move saw the ball go from Fallon to Higgins to Fernie and onto Collins who had only to walk the ball into the net. One minute from the interval Peacock and Fallon failed to stop Harvey passing up field to an unmarked Curlett. Beattie missed the cross and Mays was there to let it glance off his head.

Celtic faced the wind in the second half but if anything they already looked a beaten side despite pounding the Killie goal with shot after shot which was either defended, saved or wide. In a breakaway in the 51st minute Beattie got in a complate fankle in a one-on-one with Black which ended with the Killie inside forward being left with an open goal to pass into.

Killie most certainly knew how to defend and they knew how to take their chances when they came. Celtic in contrast were highly profligate in front of goal and were defensively inept. There would be no second trophy to go with the League Cup.
