Trivia

  • Played at Celtic Park with a 6:15pm kick off. The last 15 minutes of the game was played in the gathering gloom. Billy McPhail had recovered from his knee knock and after a fitness test he played displacing Conway who had had a decent debut game against Falkirk. For Thirds, Joe McInnes came back in.
  • Jock Stein, who was now training the Reserves, went back into hospital at the Royal Infirmary for a further operation on his ankle. He was still in considerable pain.
  • Ex Celt Billy Craig played for the Thirds and scored their goal.

Review

Third Lanark's defense leaked like the proverbial sieve and Celtic took full advantage of the poor defense to run up a 5 goal lead going into the second leg. Billy McPhail had an outstanding game as did Bobby Collins, both players getting two goals a piece. All the Celtic team played well. McPhail's first goal came from a long clearance upfield by Beattioe after a wonder save and McPhail took it on the run and shot past Robertson.
