Trivia

  • A full strength team and an unchanged side for Celtic. Recently transferred ex-Celt Jim Sharkey was at centre forward for Airdrie. Another ex-Celt, Ian John Reid was at right back.
  • Following the game, Bertie Peacock and Charlie Tully flew to Belfast to be part of the Ireland team due to take on Italy in a World Cup qualifier. With Tully getting injured in this game though both flew only Peacock played and in the end, the game was declared a Friendly only when the appointed referee ended up fog-bound in London and unable to get to the game. This went down like a lead balloon with the punters that had turned up at Windsor Park expecting a full blown World Cup game. The Italians proceeded to hack and kick the ireland team all over the park and at the end of the game the crowd invaded the pitch and assaulted several of the Italian players. This led to questions in the Italian parliament.

Review

Tully had to leave the field early for attention on a leg injury. With Celtic down to ten men they were pretty much hemmed in by Airdrie at the start. Tully resumed after ten minutes but was limping badly. Celtic got a break on 22 minutes when Mochan was pulled down in the area and Collins put the penalty away off the underside of the bar. This put the spring back into the Bhoys play and they had Airdrie on the back foot for the rest of the half and on 35 minutes Collins laid on a cross-field pass for Bertie Peacock who walloped the ball into the net.
Under the Broomfield floodlights second half play continued with Tully pretty much out the game but with Celtic still attacking. Fifteen minutes in Wilson added a third from a Mochan corner. Airdrie fought back with two quick goals from Price and Caven, the first of which barely crossed the line. This shook Celtic back and the game entered a period of to-ing and fro-ing before Collins struck again and Sammy Wilson added a fifth before the end.

A strong performance throughout the month in the League had advanced Celtic up the table
