  • Kick off was held up for 10 minutes to let large crowd in.

South of the border farms were being hit by an outbreak of foot and moth disease in cattle herds. There was a rush on for Scottish beef with prices rocketing.

Review

A tough first half with Raith Rovers ready to chase everything and giving Celtic not an inch. Both teams missed chances in the first half with Celtic the most profligate
Gemmell opened the scoring in the second half with a penalty when John Hughes was pulled down by the goalkeeper. Wallace added a second ten minutes later.
Jim Brogan was injured in the last minute of the first half. During the interval it was clear that he could not continue and McBride came on for the second half with Bertie Auld dropping back to left half.

At the end of November Celtic stood second in the league three points behind Rangers with a game in hand. The League Cup was already bagged but Celtic were out of the European Cup and then there was the debacle of the Intercontinental World Club Championship against Racing.

  • Match Report (see end of page below)

Manager Jock Stein said: "We went to Stark's Park expecting the usual defensive dour set-up that we have encountered already this season. The Raith Rovers side, newly promoted and finding their feet in the First Division, surprised us all by throwing a spanner in the works and, instead of sticking strictly to defense, they came at us from the kick-off and knocked us completely out of our stride."
