Trivia

  • Celtic had a few injuries to contend with following the Motherwell game. John Hughes who had been subbed in the second half looked to be recovering from the back injury that saw him subbed in the second half. Bertie Auld however looked like he might be out for a while with the knee and ankle injury he piucked up.
  • Scotland named a squad of 20 to face England at Hampden on the 24th. Included were Gemmell, Hughes, Johnstone, Lennox, McNeill and Simpson.
  • Rangers inform the Glasgow FA that they will not play Celtic in March in the Glasgow Cup semi final due to fixture congestion. This leads to criticism of them that they are afraid to face in form, free scoring Celtic.
  • This was one of the games in hand that Celtic had over Rangers so it was important to press on and win well this Wednesaday night game. All the players were aware of how important retaining the League title was. With Bertie Auld unfit Steve Chalmers saw himself kept on the bench and in came Charlie Gallacher for a rare start. At right half for Stirling Albion was Sammy Henderson who had just recently moved from Celtic

Review

Celtic were back to the hustle and shoot-on-sight mode but a lot of the work appeared too hasty. The win margin should have been more for all the shots Celtic had, but much of the shooting was ill-timed and off target. Gemmell scored the first goal from the penalty spot after Johnstone was brought down by McKinnon.Billy Mcneill had a good game both as a defender and also in attack from set pieces but found himself commonly obstructed and held without the opposition being punished. In a disappointing second half it was Willy Wallace who got the second goal when he hustled Reid into making a poor clearance.
John Hughes was subbed nine minutes from time by Chalmers after he injured an ankle.
