Trivia

  • Following the win against Partick Thistle in the League Cup 'flu had hit the squads. Johnstone and Lennox went down with the bug and missed the Scottish League v Irish League game on the Wednesday. Simpson, O'Neill (his first cap), Murdoch, Lennox, Wallace and Hughes played for the Scottish League at Dalymount Park, Dublin in a dismal 0-0 draw. Willie O'Neill took a serious head knock and had to leave the field and Bobby Murdoch was also injured and out from half time.
  • The Scottish League game took a real toll on the team. Bobby Murdoch would be out for at least two weeks with badly torn ankle ligaments. Willie O'Neill would miss this game. And Wallace had twisted an ankle. Luckily Gemmell and Johnstone recovered from 'flu so a rejigged side took the field with Craiog and Gemmell together at the back, Brogan moving to right half and John Clark restored on the left and Joe McBride starting at centre forward.
  • This was an all-ticket game.
  • On the same say Celtic Reserves were at home to Falkirk Reserves and defeated them 4-0. The scorers were Quinn 2, Gallagher and Macari. The a Celtic team was Fallon, McGrain, Gorman, Dalglish, Hay, Cattanach, Wilson, Gallagher, McMahon, Quinn, Macari. Sub Jackie Clark.

Review

The scoreline did not reflect the stuttering way that Celtic went about the game. Far from Craig, Clark and McBride being untried replacements they were all first team squad but their presence changed the balance of the team and it never really got going whilst scoring three goals to none.
Jim Brogan's opener was a 25 yard cracker which came at the end of a good move from Celtic. Clyde re-organised in the second half when captain Glasgow was replaced by Delaney. Lennox got the second with ten minutes to go with a typical poachers goal. And Tommy Gemmell sealed the win from the spot after Lennox was brought down in the area.
