Trivia

  • Bobby Murdoch had picked up a leg knock in the previous game against airdrie, but he recovered quickly and was back in training on the Tuesday.
  • The cold weather continued throughout Scotland and the pitch in midweek was reported as being still frozen but flat. On Hogmanay night a slight thaw set in and the pitch was playable and even for the game.
  • Celtic chairman Robert Kelly is knighted in the New Years honours list. Jock Stein tactfully commented in the Herald, "This is an honour for the man as an individual and an honour for the club. We are all delighted that the man and the club have been recognised in such a way. I think it is long overdue."

Review

Clyde had little to show against a Celtic side determined to show their resolve and mettle when given a decent pitch to display their superior skills. Tommy Callaghan opened the scoring ion the 19th minute with a bullet shot that cannoned in off of one of the uprights. Tommy Gemmell added to that from the penalty spot with his characteristic rocket when Fraser handled the ball. Tommy Callaghan added a third before half time to put the Celts 3-0 up. Willie Wallace and Bobby Lennox added further goals in the second half. Clyde were able but offered little in the way of goal threat.

At the start of the year and before the second Glasgow derby the table looked like this
