Trivia

  • Jimmy Johnstone picked up a back injury from the Hearts game but was soon back in training both with Celtic and the Scotland World Cup squad. John Hughes was still out with a groin strain but he was on the road to recovery and it was thought he would be ready for this game.
  • The tie had been due to be played on the Saturday 8th, but the game was postponed due to frost and snow which gripped the whole of the country, with the Shawfield pitch bone hard on the Saturday. They had also been due to play Motherwell on the Monday night. To further complicate things a last minute friendly had been arranged in Malta for the Wednesday night of this game to play either Hibernians or Valetta as part of the lead-up for the European Cup game against AC Milan. The flights had already been booked.
  • This game kicked off at the scheduled time of 4.30pm in the afternoon due to floodlight problems at Shawfield.
  • Bertie Auld came on for the injured Ronnie Simpson after 15 minutes. Tommy Gemmell took over in goal.

Review

Jock Stein was most unhappy at this game going ahead in frozen conditions although the pitch had thawed from Saturday.
This was the beginning of the end for Ronnie Simpson when he was carried off injured after a clash with Jimmy Quinn, who ironically was on loan fro Celtic to Clyde.
Despite Gemmell going in goal he was never troubled and Clyde seemed happy with the draw and replay at Parkhead.
Celtic's forwards spurned chances and Johnstone's miss in front of goal was especially bad.
