Review

It's a sad night for Celtic when Ronnie Simpson is carried off in 78 minutes after making a brave save from Ingram. Simpson dislocated his shoulder again and this time it was to be the end and this was the legendary Celtic goalkeeper's last appearance.

Ayr Utd matched Celtic for fitness and it was them that took the lead on 14 minutes when Ingram beat McNeill and shot home past Ronnie Simpson. Back came Celtic and a superb cross from Tommy Gemmell was headed home by Harry Hood for an excellent goal. In the second half it was Dalglish who stabbed the ball through which was missed by defender Quinn allowing Stevie Chalmers to pick up and dispatch home. Back came Ayr and with 12 minutes left Simpson went down to push a shot from Ingrams around the post. He stopped the goal but dislocated his shoulder in doing so.

Tommy Gemmell took over for the last 12 minutes and looked comfortable between the posts. Ayr pushed but were too rushed in that last period and Celtic won through to the final against St Johnstone.
