Trivia

  • Celtic players opt to play in Adidas training shoes on a day of heavy frost. The Reserves game at Celtic Park was called off as the covers would have to be lifted and Jock Stein wanted the ground in perfect shape for the postponed fixture against St Mirren which had been brought forward to Monday night.
  • Frost hit Scotland heavily this weekend. Cappielow was well sanded and iron-hard underneath.
  • Ex Celtic legend Bobby Collins plays for Morton. There were three other ex-Celtic players in the Morton side – Gerry Sweeney at inside right and John Murray at right back and O'Neill at outside left
  • Morton play in unusual orange and blue strip.

Review

Despite the icy conditions this was a busy match with action at both ends. The first goal came from a corner which Harry Hood sent over and Macari headed home. Nielsen performed wonders in the Morton goal to keep it to 1-0 to Celtic at half time.
Morton had chances to equalise in the second half but were unlucky. McNeill had the ball in the net but the goal was chalked off for pushing. It took till 12 minutes from the end for the second goal to arrive. A flashing cross from Wallace was reached by Hood who stuck out a foot and put the ball past Nielsen. Bertie Auld came on for Jimmy Johnstone and the bold Bertiw provided the pass for Wallace to add a third before the end.
