Review

Davie Hay had a centre back crisis going into this game with defenders Tom McAdam, Willie McStay and Graeme Sinclair all missing through injury or suspension. He chose to play Murdo MacLeod as sweeper behind Roy Aitken and MacLeod was not to let him down.

Celtic started well and were awarded a penalty in 17 minutes which Mo Johnston missed. After that Rangers took control and deservedly took the lead when Davie Cooper scored after a fine passing move between Derek Ferguson and Iain Ferguson.

After half time Celtic stepped up a gear and scored just 50 seconds into the second half when Johnston rose splendidly to head home a McGarvey cross after McGarvey had turned McKinnon inside out. Johnston ran towards the Celtic fans in the Broomloan Road stand and embraced a fan who had spilled onto the track. Johnston was booked and the supporter taken away by Police.

Colquhoun began to come on to a game and he showed he had the beating of Munro. From a good Colquhoun run McClair found space and scored with a shot from the edge of the box. McCloy in the Rangers goal seemed fooled by a slight deflection.

Celtic retreated after the goals and had control of the midfield with Burns and McStay influential and McClair a constant threat from his unusual deep lying midfield role. However it was Murdo MacLeod who earned the plaudits afterwards with his performance as make shift sweeper.
