Review

Galway United 0…………….Celtic 2 (Burns 19, McInally 37)

Celtic came to Galway as Scottish Champions and fielded a surprisingly strong team for this friendly match, which was a testimonial for Packie Bonner's brother Denis. Disappointingly though only a crowd of 1500 showed up, which may have been due to the timing of the game, in the middle of the annual Galway Races.

Celtic put on a fine exhibition but only found the net twice. In the 19th minute Tommy Burns beat the offside trap and ran on on to a Roy Aitken long ball slipping it under Richie Blackmore (no, not the Deep Purple guitarist). Then eight minutes before the break, Alan McInally scored with an impressive diving header from a Brian McClair cross.

In the second half Galway came close to scoring a few times but Packie pulled off some quality saves. Mo Johnston made a brief appearance but was injured 20 minutes after coming on – what was thought to be a serious injury (he went for an X-Ray and returned to Glasgow with his ankle and lower leg in plaster).
