Described as a dreadful display; Stranraer’s Bruce Clelland struck the bar with minutes remaining; nobody appeared any the wiser why the team were playing so badly; Stranraer were 2nd Division fodder; McAvennie’s goal described as “opportunist strike”; Stranraer deserved a draw – manager Alex McAnespie put two markers on McStay all game; Lex Baillie had an outstanding game against a battling Clelland; Bonner also saved a penalty from Clelland; Walker had a header off the post.

After this game Clelland actually emigrated to Australia.

” Sure we didn’t play well and what made it more disappointing was that we had only recently played some great football against Hibs. The players too are disappointed at having let themselves down. Perhaps the early goal lulled us into thinking that more would follow no matter how we played. Our finishing though was abysmal and some of the misses rivalled those of the opposition.” · “The fact that smalller clubs are beginning to get useful results against much bigger teams is, I think indicative of the healthy state of the game in Scotland.
