Attention was finally focused on the field on Saturday during the team's record 21-0 win over local part-timers FC Beatrix, a performance which pleased new coach Wim Jansen.

"I was impressed by everyone," stated the Dutchman, turning down the opportunity to single out any individual performance despite six goals from Tommy Johnson. "They all passed the ball and ran well, it was important to play out wide."

David Hannah, with his first goal in Celtic colours, had the honour of opening the scoring in the fourth minute with his first of two strikes on the night, and when the home goalkeeper Ronald Woensdertf fumbled a Tom Boyd cross into his net for the sixth after 26 minutes, the game was already well over as a contest. It was nine by half-time and Alan Stubbs, looking at home in an unfamiliar midfield role, completed a hat-trick after 76 minutes to make the score 18-0.

Nineteen-year-old substitute Paul McBride, the centrepiece of Willie McStay's Celtic youth team over the past two seasons, also netted three goals while the other scores came from Andreas Thom, Marc Anthony, Simon Donnelly (2) and Brian McLaughlin.

Johnson modestly played down his own achievement saying: "It's just about good habits. It's good to get a bit of confidence going. I enjoyed the game."

Jansen's demeanour appeared to tie in perfectly with the caricature of the wily continental tacticians with an obsessional interest for the game. Although he's only been in the job for a couple of days, his methods are beginning to get through to his players.

"It's only early days just now but he's got down to some serious coaching in the first couple of sessions," suggested Tom Boyd, who captained Celtic on Saturday.

"It's been difficult for him, with a game so early, but there will be a couple of things for him to pick up on.

"He's been stopping the sessions every few minutes to explain things. He's come across quite well, at the moment it's very encouraging.

"We had a training session before the game to let Wim see what stage we're at in our preparations. No player likes pre-season, which we're still in, but once the games start coming, you know that you're getting closer to the big kick-off."

With Wednesday's European draw and transfer deadline looming large, Boyd is in no doubt that Celtic need to strengthen the playing pool.

"Yes it's a fair question," he answered when it was suggested that a few new bodies were required. "A couple of fresh faces doesn't do any harm. They'll keep everybody on their toes. The more good players that come in, the tougher the competition becomes."

Celtic's limited playing pool will face a sterner examination on Wednesday with a visit to First Division outfit FC Groningen, currently taking part in the Intertoto Cup, but so far it has been a happy homecoming for the club's Dutch coach.
