Trivia

The attendance may not have been quite as large as all would have hoped but those present will remember this game, in particular it's conclusion for some time. The night may have been all about Kenny Arthur but it was a certain Chic Charnley that stole the show with a stunning equaliser with time running out.
Celtic, including six of the Scotland Under 19 side, were coached by Willie McStay for this game.

Review

It was Thistle that had the game's first chance. Graham Gibson headed the ball into the path of Stephen McConalogue whose shot was pushed round the post for acorner.

Kenny Arthur was soon in action himself and in the 9th minute was well placed to save from Simon Ferry.

In the 31st minute he produced an even better save from the same player but by then Thistle were already a goal down. Michael McGlinchey, one of Celtic's Scotland stars of the future, demonstrated his undoubted class with an excellent finish from the edge of the box.

Thistle were able to haul themselves level with 8 minutes of the first half remaining. The ball bounced around the Celtic penalty box before it finally fell at the feet of one of three trialists on show in the Thistle starting eleven who sent a left foot shot into the back of the net.

It was time to role back the years in the second half with some Thistle stars of the not too distant past making an appearance and John Lambie taking charge of the team once more.

The young Celtic side though remained competitive and Kenny Arthur was far from idle on his big night. Celtic looked to have sealed a win in the 75th minute when Ross Wallace outpaced the, by now, ageing Thistle defence, rounded Kenny Arthur before placing the ball in the net.

There was though a real sting in the tail of the match and that sting was provided by Chic Charnley. With just five minutes remaining he collected the ball some 25 yards out before unleashing a shot that was destined for the back of the net from the moment it left his left foot.
