Review

We'd love to say it was a turnaround from the hapless first game, and in fairness it was. However, an exceptionally poor start in the first few mins saw Rapid gain two shots on target on goal and get one in the back of the net following some very poor defending by our much maligned central defenders. We came well into the game after this and were on top for much of it but were poor in the opposition box. A wonderful goal by Skippy was the least we deserved but we did little to capitalise on the rest of our possession. The referee didn't help by not carding the opposition who were blatantly fouling our players. Some good work in the second half but we didn't score. Rapid had their chances, but the scoreline didn't reflect what we deserved and the grudge match passed by with neither taking an upper hand. Rapid Vienna will be the happier of the two sides.

Credit to the away fans for creating a very good atmosphere and some digs at our support, but that's football and the game passed with next to no trouble.

No rapid revenge as Celtic are held by their old foes.

02 October 2009

EUROPA LEAGUE GROUP PHASE/Celtic 1 Rapid Vienna 1:CELTIC FAILED to gain closure on 25 years of hurt as they were held 1-1 by old foes Rapid Vienna in their Europa League clash at Parkhead.
The home side were shocked to lose a goal to Rapid striker Nikica Jelavic after only three minutes but recovered to level in the 20th minute through Scott McDonald.
However, the visitors were worth their point in a decent match between two evenly-matched sides.
Celtic find themselves bottom of Group C with one point after two games and face Hamburg at home later in the month but they would probably have swapped any possible success against the Germans for a win over Rapid.
After losing 3-1 in the first game in Vienna when the sides met in the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1984, Celtic were 3-0 up at home and in control when Rapid player Rudi Weinhofer collapsed to the ground, claiming to have been hit by a missile thrown from the terraces.
After originally fining both clubs, Uefa ordered a third game to be played after an appeal by the Austrian club. Current Rapid boss Peter Pacult scored the only goal of the match, which was played at Old Trafford, to take his side through to the next round.
Despite the almost hysterical hype in the lead-up to the game, however, Celtic Park was well short of its 60,000 capacity but those who turned up left the visiting side, including a couple of thousand Rapid fans, many of whom were bare-chested, in no doubt as to their feelings.
Uefa’s “Respect” campaign found no place among those supporters who displayed banners with words such as “We Still Hate Rapid”, “Unforgiven’, and ”Cheats, Liars, Conmen“. It added to an already rancorous atmosphere but the Viennese side responded with an early goal which stunned the home support.
After testing Artur Boruc with a decent header from 14 yards moments beforehand, Jelavic raced on to a pass from skipper Steffen Hofmann and rifled an angled shot past the Celtic goalkeeper and into the far corner of the net.
Rapid’s apparent desire to simply defend their lead was their downfall in the 20th minute when slack play allowed McDonald to level.
Andreas Dober’s careless pass to fellow defender Ragnvald Soma 30 yards from his goal was intercepted by the alert McDonald who raced through to arrow his low drive past Helge Payer from just inside the box. The Parkhead side piled forward in the closing stages looking for the winner but too often their passing was frantic rather than controlled and in the end they had to accept the point.

Frustrated Mowbray rues mistakes as Celtic fail to break down Rapid

02 October 2009

Provided by: The Scotsman

TONY MOWBRAY saw Celtic slip to the bottom of their Europa League group last night following a 1-1 draw against Rapid Vienna at Parkhead and admitted to anxiety over the current failings of his team at both ends of the pitch.
For the third consecutive home match, Celtic had to recover from the loss of a cheaply conceded early goal, Nikica Jelavic putting Rapid ahead after just three minutes before Scott McDonald rescued a point.
Following their opening 2-1 defeat away to Hapoel Tel-Aviv two weeks ago, it leaves Celtic isolated at the bottom of Group C after Hamburg defeated the Israelis 4-2 last night.
Celtic manager Mowbray insists his team can still qualify for the knockout stage but knows he has to address both their poor strike rate and defensive aberrations.
"It is a concern," admitted Mowbray, whose team also lost early goals in their two previous home games against Dundee United and Hearts.
"We probably don't convert enough chances and unfortunately we have got into a rut of three home games on the bounce when we have conceded early goals. Our concentration levels have to improve. We can win football matches, but strikers have got to take chances and defenders have to not make bad decisions like they did tonight for their opening goal."
Celtic captain Stephen McManus was the guilty party last night, giving the ball away in the build-up to Jelavic's strike.
"It was very evident that it was an individual error and the players are aware of that," added Mowbray. "Footballers make mistakes. It is frustrating. We gave them a goal of a start. From my point of view, we did enough to get three points but we didn't get the second goal. We pushed hard but it didn't come."
Celtic will now require to collect points from their remaining away fixtures in Hamburg and Vienna if they are to secure a top-two finish in Group C but Mowbray remains upbeat about their prospects of doing so.
"I don't see why not," he said. "Hamburg is a very difficult fixture for us, they are probably the favourites to win the group. They are undoubtedly the team with the most resources and top quality footballers. But we look forward to that challenge.
"There was enough evidence tonight to suggest we can go to Vienna and give Rapid problems. And I know we can give Hapoel Tel-Aviv problems here. So that's six points I'm giving us and maybe we can win both games against Hamburg, which would be a total of 13 points and enough to qualify.
"I take the positives. I judge performance levels. The performance level was high tonight but we have not won the match. If we had performed poorly and drawn the match, it would be more frustrating. But if we play like we did for long spells tonight, we will be fine."
In the closing stages Aiden McGeady was substituted, but Mowbray said the winger was not troubled by the ankle injury which had made him a doubtful starter for the match. He is expected to be fit for Sunday's SPL showdown with Rangers at Ibrox, along with Andreas Hinkel and Paddy McCourt who were left out last night.
"Aiden is okay," insisted Mowbray. "He was a little frustrated he didn't get as much of the ball as he would have liked.
"That was partly because of the way Rapid condensed their half of the pitch, but we have to try and overcome whatever system we come up against. It would have been too much of a gamble to play Andreas or Paddy tonight. It wasn't a gamble I wanted to take. I hope they both have a chance for the weekend."
Rapid Vienna coach Peter Pacult expressed his satisfaction with an outcome which leaves his side a point clear at the top of the group.
"I'm very happy with the result and, more importantly, with the performance," said Pacult. "We fought from the first minute onwards. The first goal took the pressure off us. It was 90 minutes of a high tempo, which is difficult for us because we don't play games of that pace in Austria. But we took the fight to Celtic in the second half and thoroughly deserved a point.
"Up until Celtic scored, they didn't show much. We were not under the amount of pressure we expected. It was a careless mistake to give them their goal, but you have to deal with those things.
"It made the team a little shaky for a while, but altogether I thought our performance was excellent. I didn't think we would have four points after the first two games, but we have beaten the favourites and now taken a point from the second favourites. But I'm not going to make calculations until we have played all six games."
Pacult also had the last word on the controversial 1984 clash between the clubs which had dominated the build-up to last night's tie.
"The atmosphere was very good, very pleasant tonight," he smiled. "I'd like to say, in inverted commas, that there was no aggressive behaviour from the supporters like there was in 1984. The atmosphere in the stands in British football was louder 25 years ago. There was much more enthusiasm then.
"I'm not saying the atmosphere was poor tonight, but maybe British football has calmed down after what happened in the stadiums in the 1990s."
