Review

Frustrating game with our main man Keane not at his best. Not enough shots on goal and the opposition battled hard.

Dundee Utd should have been in front after the first ten minutes, possibly by two goals but let us back in. Some great play by Kamara saw him score and he could have had two in the match. Beyond that, little to say and we have a long way to go. A penalty in injury time gave Keane a goal he didn't deserve but gave us the comfort we needed to secure second place (which we were genuinely concerned we might lose this season).

Good to see us win even when we play poor and hope we can carry this into the next season.

Celtic beat Dundee United to clinch second place in the Scottish Premier League hours before their title challenge ended.

Rangers were confirmed as champions with victory over Hibernian after Diomansy Kamara's strike and Robbie Keane's penalty gave Celtic their win.

Kamara put the visitors ahead with a neat left-footed strike on 30 minutes.

Jennison Myrie-Williams saw red for United before Keane converted an injury-time penalty to seal the win.

Celtic are now 10 points ahead of United with three games to play but cannot surpass Rangers' 11-point advantage.

United started brightly, and David Goodwillie was unlucky not to score with a shot from an unbelievably acute angle which beat keeper Artur Boruc, but deflected off the near post and across the face of the goal.

Keane and Scott Brown played a one-two in the United box, but Darren Dods managed to nick the ball from the Celtic captain on the penalty spot.

United were on top and Glenn Loovens had to hack the ball off the line as Jon Daly looked set to tap in Garry Kenneth's fierce volley from a tight angle.

With a wet surface at Tannadice the match was being played at a frenetic pace, although both defences had settled down and clear-cut chances were becoming harder to come by.

However, after the quietest spell of the game, it was Kamara who broke the deadlock with a left-foot shot into the top corner after drifting in from the right-hand side of the box.

Kamara almost doubled his tally on the stroke of half-time, but his glancing shot from Aiden McGeady's cross went just past the post.

The second half began at much the same tempo as the first had ended, and the visitors were handed an early opportunity when Kenneth fouled McGeady on the left wing but Keane's volley from Lee Naylor's delivery was off target.

Out of nowhere, the lively Goodwillie rattled the woodwork for a second time when his drilled effort from Daly's knock-down beat Boruc but came back off the inside of the post.

Celtic's central defensive injury problems returned, with Glenn Loovens being replaced by Mark Wilson midway through the second half – Darren O'Dea having come on for Thomas Rogne in the first half.

Kamara passed up another gilt-edged chance when he blazed a chipped effort over the bar from 12 yards out following another tempting McGeady cross.

An already-open game was becoming stretched and United substitute Myrie-Williams received a second yellow card for a challenge on Landry N'Guemo, and the hosts then went down to nine men as Mihael Kovacevic limped off with all substitutes used.

United lost their discipline as they tried desperately to get back into the match and Garry Kenneth and Prince Buaben both picked up bookings within a minute before goalkeeper Dusan Pernis conceded an injury-time penalty and was cautioned for fouling McGeady.

Keane duly converted the spot-kick to seal victory and the SPL's second Champions League spot.

HOW Celtic must wish next season began today. Their fifth win in a row prolonged this season's league race for no more than a couple of hours, but the hardnosed, professional manner in which it was achieved suggests next year's championship will be far more keenly contested.
They offered glimpses of the free-flowing football which their former manager Tony Mowbray wanted them to espouse, most notably in the neat interchange which gave them a first-half lead through Diomansy Kamara and the sweeping move which led to Robbie Keane's late penalty.
But they also displayed a willingness to graft away at times when there was no obvious reward, competing tenaciously while also succeeding in maintaining their self-discipline in a game which saw eight bookings and a sending-off for Dundee United substitute Jennison Myrie-Williams.
Of more concrete significance for the future, by ending United's 11-game unbeaten run, Celtic ensured they will finish as SPL runners-up, and will thus be in the Champions League qualifiers come late summer. The home team had guaranteed they would finish no lower than third by beating Motherwell seven days earlier, but yesterday they lacked the cutting edge they needed to keep the fight for second alive.
In a game which ended with Neil Lennon's team well on top, the curious thing was United began the far more confident of the sides, and came close to taking the lead in the third minute through David Goodwillie. Danny Swanson did the spade work down the right, nicking inside Landry Nguemo then flicking the ball through. Goodwillie's first touch took him wide of Artur Boruc, but also apparently too wide for him to get a shot on target. However, from right on the byeline his cross-***-shot eluded the goalkeeper and brushed the near post before rolling across goal and just missing the far post.
With Craig Conway in threatening form on the left, United maintained territorial advantage for the opening half-hour, restricting Celtic to little more than the odd break through Aiden McGeady. With ten minutes played the Celtic defence only half-cleared a ball into the box, and when Garry Kenneth drove it back in from the right Glenn Loovens had to head away from close to his goal-line as Jon Daly closed in.
At the other end, Kenneth and his colleagues had looked assured in everything they did, but they were undone after half an hour when Marc-Antoine Fortune and Kamara combined to create the opening goal. Drifting out to the right, Fortune took up possession and then passed infield for Kamara to run on to the loose ball. The Senegalese player took a steadying touch, then shot past the helpless Dusan Pernis from the edge of the area.
Celtic looked far brighter after the goal, and although they were forced to reorganise when Thomas Rogne came off injured, they spent the rest of the half looking the likelier of the teams to score. Indeed, Kamara almost doubled his team's lead just before the break, but his first-time volley from a McGeady pass swerved just wide of the right post.
The winger kept up his good work in the opening stages of the second-half, creating two further scoring opportunities for his team. The first chance, from a free-kick, fell to Keane, who volleyed wide. The second, from open play, saw McGeady dribble clear of Kovacevic then find Kamara with an almost inch-perfect cross. Unmarked and with time to spare, the on-loan midfielder volleyed over.
If either of those efforts had gone in, Celtic would have spent the remaining 35 minutes in a far more relaxed frame of mind, as it was becoming increasingly obvious United were running out of ideas. That they might pull one goal back looked improbable: recovering from a two-goal deficit was some way beyond them.
Goodwillie did hit the post again with a shot from a Jon Daly knockdown, but that was their only effort of any consequence in the second-half. Peter Houston threw on first Fran Sandaza then Danny Cadamarteri up front in search of the equaliser, but neither forward was able to make any impact against a defence which had required a further rejig when Loovens was also forced off by injury.
Increasingly pinned back in their own half as Nguemo and Scott Brown took a stranglehold on midfield, United became increasingly frustrated. Myrie-Williams, the first home substitute of the afternoon, had been booked just three minutes after coming on. A dozen minutes after that he saw yellow again, with referee Iain Brines appearing to indicate the caution had been for repeated fouling in various parts of the pitch – which seemed improbable given the player, a replacement for Swanson, had stuck closely to the right touchline.
Their reduction to ten men all but ended United as an attacking force, and they were further weakened for the final five minutes when Kovacevic limped off. With all three substitutes used, they had to play on, nine against 11, and it seemed just a matter of time before Celtic scored again.
That time had almost run out before they did – and when they did, it was courtesy of the referee, whose award of a penalty after McGeady and Pernis had collided while chasing a ball from Fortune was just one of several debatable decisions. Keane stepped up to take it and scored with ease.
