Trivia

  • Celtic go through to the semi-finals.
  • Celtic to play St Johnstone away again on Saturday coming.

Review

Celtic took a quick-fire three nil early in the first half and nearly turned it into a farce allowing St Johnstone to come back in and somehow almost steal a 3-3 draw at the death. St Johnstone dominated in part but our side really needs to gee itself up else it will be deja vu from last year.

Anthony Stokes strikes twice before Celtic resist St Johnstone comeback

Celtic would have valued a controversy-free evening as much as a smooth passage into the semi-finals of the Co-operative Insurance Cup. They did not receive either, a first-half goal burst sufficient to swat aside St Johnstone's challenge, but only just.

There was unforeseen worry for Neil Lennon's men along the way, which may not have transpired had an errant offside flag not denied Joe Ledley when sent clean through on goal with the score already at 3-0. Another official was therefore cast as the villain of the piece.

Some respite was not fully provided, then, from a period which has been dominated by Celtic's unhappiness at refereeing decisions. Lennon should rue his team's approach when three goals ahead, just as much as Ledley's offside call.

As Murray Davidson scored St Johnstone's second goal, Celtic were forced to smarten up their act, but they barely managed that.

Given the ongoing machinations between Celtic and officialdom, it was actually a relief to have a game which could temporarily halt claim, counter-claim and conspiracy theories. Not that the visiting support in Perth appear willing to move on just yet, with chants making it perfectly plain what they thought of the Scottish FA. None of it was complimentary.

At least Celtic's players did their bit, and promptly, to divert attention towards football. Within 13 minutes Celtic had raced into a three-goal lead, in what was the perfect riposte to Sunday's poor showing in the Old Firm defeat.

Anthony Stokes notched his first of the night from 14 yards after a piece of generous St Johnstone defending knocked a Ki Sung-yueng cross back into his path.

Niall McGinn, making a rare starting appearance, doubled that lead from close range after the goalkeeper Graeme Smith could only parry a swerving free-kick from Ki. Just 60 seconds later, as Stokes converted a McGinn pass, the normally resolute St Johnstone side had been eliminated from the competition in all but name.

The home team are due some credit, though, for not surrendering. Sam Parkin volleyed past Fraser Forster in the Celtic goal to offer at least some St Johnstone cheer. Glenn Loovens, not for the first time, had displayed Celtic's own defensive troubles as he was out-muscled by the former Chelsea trainee.

St Johnstone's hopes intensified nine minutes after the interval. Davidson rose practically unchallenged to head home a corner from Danny Grainger to reignite the contest. Only a brilliant reaction save from Forster in stoppage time, after a Jennison Myrie-Williams shot was deflected, halted a stunning comeback.

St Johnstone 2-3 Celtic

By Thomas McGuigan

Celtic fired three goals inside 13 minutes before surviving a St Johnstone comeback to win a pulsating Co-operative Insurance Cup tie.

Anthony Stokes drilled Celtic into the lead before Niall McGinn forced the ball home after Graeme Smith had parried Ki Sung-Yeung's free-kick.

Stokes added his second but Sam Parkin reduced the deficit when he pounced on Glenn Loovens's mistake.

Murray Davidson's header gave Saints hope but the visitors held on.

St Johnstone, fresh from their 2-1 league win over Hamilton Accies, welcomed a Celtic side looking to purge the memory of last weekend's Old Firm derby defeat.

Neil Lennon's men started purposefully and the movement of Stokes and McGinn caused the Saints defence some early problems.

Liam Craig cleared McGinn's low cross after the Northern Ireland international had been fed by Gary Hooper.

But Stokes gave Celtic an early lead when Ki's cross was not cleared and the striker drilled a superb shot low past Smith.

The visitors doubled their lead soon after when Smith could only parry Ki's free-kick from about 15 yards and McGinn pounced to lash the ball home from close range.

And Stokes scored his second and Celtic's third when McGinn raced down the right and his cross was directed home via Smith's right-hand post.

Hooper then threaded a great ball through to Joe Ledley, but the former Cardiff City midfielder was flagged offside as he bore down on goal when he appeared to be played on by the Saints defence.
The home side seized on that let-off moments later when Smith's long punt downfield was headed on by Grainger and Parkin outfoxed Loovens to arrow the ball home.

Five minutes before the break Craig found himself in space on the edge of the area but he lashed the ball high and wide of Forster's goal under pressure from Daniel Majstorovic.

Saints spurned a great chance to reduce the deficit further on the stroke of half-time when Parkin found himself in acres of space in the box, but the striker's shot was blocked by Forster.
The hosts came racing out of the traps after the break and appeared to grow in confidence against a shaky Celtic defence.

And they scored their second of the night when Grainger's header was powerfully headed home by Davidson as the midfielder stole in ahead of Majstorovic.
Hooper then scooped a great chance wide when he found himself through on goal against Smith.

Saints looked increasingly dangerous, particularly at set-pieces, and Parkin was denied by Forster's superb reaction save with the Celtic defence all at sea.

Hooper missed a glorious chance to extend Celtic's lead when he lost his footing as he tried to round keeper Smith inside the box and Stokes's attempted back-heel was cleared for a corner.

Saints pressed furiously in the search for an equaliser and Myrie-Williams looked to have scored in injury-time but Forster stabbed it clear as Celtic held on to book their place in the last four.
