Trivia

  • Celtic balls up, and drop two points.
  • We scored two at the death but last goal was not given.
  • Appalling reffing by Collum who made repeated mistakes, esp seeing Forrest wrongly straight off red!!! Terrible.
  • George Peat (SFA President) starts war of words with Celtic after we make an appeal over a 6 game touchline ban to Lennon!
  • Celtic make a response to Peat but it's all another war this season for proper treatment and professionalism.

Review

Our performance was lazy. We seemed to treat the match like a stroll in the park. The system didn't help us at all but Lennon didn't have many other options. We have one striker, what other system should we have played? Ljungberg isn't fit enough yet to start the match so that ruled him out. I would've perhaps shifted Ledley to the left and played Brown. We always seem to play poorly in Hamilton and I am fed up of the way these pathetic football clubs attempt to play the game. Hamilton had no intention of getting the ball down and playing the game of football. They set out to frustrate and kick us off the park. Gavin Skelton – MOTM? No wonder Scotland haven't qualified for a tournament in over ten years if this is the standard of a MOTM performance*. His only role in the match was to stop McCourt by any means possible. That is the limit of their ambition. Perhaps I am just bitter about the result but the football on show is horrible and these clubs setting up with a system that means they either have a five man midfield or defence. It is so difficult to break down. Overall our performance lacked the final pass and a striker that could hold the ball up and bring other players into the game.

The refereeing performance was below school boy. It was the complete performance in terms of eneptitude. I'm sure George Peat had a little chuckle and a giggle as officials managed to wrongly allow a goal against us, wrongly send off one our players and deny us a clear penalty. Kudos to the SFA and Dallas' for the wonderful standard of his referees.
Decision 1, offside goal. Shocker Celtic dis-advantaged.
Decision 2, Forrest red, Celtic dis-advantaged.
Decision 3, Hamilton red card. Correct but no real advantage as we are already down to 10,
Decision 4, McGinn penalty, booked when genuine foul, Celtic disadvantaged.
Decision 5, Izzy Penalty. Neutral as correct decision.
Decision 6, Last minute line call. Looked correct decision so neutral but even if there was doubt who would have been disadvantaged?? So better give it anyway.

Hamilton celebrate after Simon Mensing opens the scoring for Hamilton Academical. Photograph: Lynne Cameron/PA It had seemed impossible that levels of controversy within this game could match those that arrived immediately beforehand. The reality proved otherwise.
Open warfare between Celtic and the Scottish Football Association had erupted before kick-off. In response to Celtic's gripes about a six-game touchline ban handed down to their manager, Neil Lennon, the SFA's president, George Peat, had branded the club "tiresome". Celtic hit back with a statement questioning why Peat was "attacking" them.
Events in Hamilton proved equally colourful. The hosts finished with nine men, Celtic 10, with Lennon's team only rescuing a point thanks to a stoppage-time penalty. There remained time for Celtic to have what would have been a winning goal chalked off.
Afterwards, Lennon offered a withering critique of the match officials. Hamilton's opener, which arrived with a player in an offside position, particularly riled the Celtic manager. "It was not good enough," said Lennon of the refereeing display. "We just want officials to do their job properly. There was a player two yards offside at their goal, it is staggering. It was totally unjust but it [the goal] stood nonetheless."
On matters relating to football, Lennon also had cause for concern. He had only one fit striker for this match, with Anthony Stokes turning out as a lone forward but proving anonymous. Despite the manager's claims to the contrary, Celtic generally toiled at New Douglas Park.
In the 27th minutes, at a Hamilton free-kick that had been dubiously awarded in the first place, Martin Canning was in an offside position when the ball was played into the penalty area. Canning's positioning was enough to irritate the Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster, whose block of the set play only allowed Simon Mensing to head home.
There was merely a shake of the head from Lennon as his team were reduced to 10 men. Willie Collum, seemingly on the advice of his assistant Tom Murphy, showed red to James Forrest after a tackle on David Buchanan. The young winger was late, but a booking would have been a more legitimate punishment.
Jim McAlister's dismissal looked more clearcut. The Hamilton substitute, only on the field for 35 seconds and having not touched the ball, stupidly left a boot in on Mark Wilson. Collum had little option but to level up the teams.
Celtic's Niall McGinn earned a booking for an alleged dive inside the Hamilton penalty area, raising Lennon's temperature further. "It was a penalty," the manager would claim.
One was awarded after Mensing upended Emilio Izaguirre, the Hamilton scorer earning a red card for his troubles and Stokes scoring from 12 yards.
The Celtic striker headed home deep into time added on but Lennon's celebrations were cut short by an assistant referee's flag, the ball having looped out of play from a corner. It was the final act of a dramatic night.

Hamilton Accies 1-1 Celtic

By Stevie Miller
Celtic salvaged a point via a late penalty in a drama-filled clash with Hamilton at New Douglas Park.
Accies took the lead through Simon Mensing with Martin Canning seemingly in an offside position.
Referee Willie Collum dismissed Celtic's James Forrest and Hamilton's Jim McAllister after the break.
Mensing also saw red for a foul in the box, Anthony Stokes converting from the spot before having a goal disallowed deep into injury time.

The Parkhead side now sit five points clear of arch-rivals Rangers, but the Ibrox side have three games in hand.
Celtic had the bulk of possession in the early part of the game, but found it hard to break down the Accies rearguard with the home side pressing Celtic players whenever they were on the ball.
And it was the visitors who had the first real effort when Stokes flashed the ball across the face of goal, Accies keeper Tomas Cerny tipping wide.
Mensing then forced Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster to get down and save a weak shot after a neat one-two brought the Hamilton defender bearing down on the Celtic goal.
The Accies defence then somehow managed to escape going a goal down after Paddy McCourt cut the ball back across the Hamilton goal-line after a mazy run, but Mark McLaughlin blocked the shot from Forrest.
Then, against then run of play, Flavio Paixao's free-kick was parried by Forster's feet and Mensing was first to react by sending a looping header into the net, although Celtic manager Neil Lennon complained that Accies' Canning was offside as the ball was played in.
Celtic upped the tempo as they looked for an equaliser and Forrest should perhaps have done better when he blazed over the bar after a mazy run on the left.
And the visitors' task became harder when youngster Forrest was shown a straight red card by referee Willie Collum for a rash challenge on Hamilton's David Buchanan on 49 minutes.
Despite going down to 10 men Celtic continued to put Hamilton under pressure, but Emilio Izaguirre blazed a shot wide of Cerny's right-hand post after breaking out from left-back.
And referee Collum restored parity of numbers as substitute McAllister saw red after only 35 seconds on the pitch, the midfielder penalised for scything down Celtic full-back Mark Wilson.
With plenty of space available both sides pushed forward and Paixao tested Forster after beating Majstorovic before Celtic went straight to other end where Stokes was denied by Cerny's low save.
Accies were throwing bodies into the breach to block a torrent of Celtic attacks but Stokes managed to force a drive from the edge of the box which Cerny collected to his left.
And the Czech keeper pulled off a fine save as he threw himself to his left to tip an effort from the same player wide of the post.
McCourt played in fellow Nothern Ireland international Niall McGinn with a terrific defence-splitting pass but Cerny again saved Accies, parrying at the feet of the winger.
With only seconds left of normal time, Hamilton goalscorer Mensing saw the third red of the match after he blocked Izaguirre in the box, handing Celtic a lifeline.
Stokes sent Cerny the wrong way from the spot-kick to bring the sides level.
With six minutes of injury time played, Celtic threw everything at Accies in search of a winner and the drama continued as Stokes headed the ball into the net from Mulgrew's corner in the last action of the match.
But his celebrations were cut short when the assistant referee judged the corner had curved out before the Irishman connected.

Lennon 'staggered' by decisions

Celtic boss Neil Lennon felt his side suffered from poor decisions by officials as they drew 1-1 at Hamilton.
Lennon questioned calls by the referee and one of his assistants during two incidents in the match.
"You're talking about big moments in the game again – Hamilton's goal, which shouldn't have been a goal, and penalty we should've had," said Lennon.
"It seems to be every other game now. I don't want to say too much as I'm in enough trouble, but it's frustrating."

In an extraordinary encounter at New Douglas Park, SPL bottom club Hamilton took the lead against the table toppers thanks to Simon Mensing's header on 28 minutes.
The linesman is quick to see the corner that goes out for Stokes' goal at the end, but he can't see a blatant offside. Staggering
Celtic manager Neil Lennon
Celtic were reduced to 10 men when James Forrest was shown a straight red, but Hamilton were reduced to nine following straight dismissals for Jim McAlister and Mensing.
The latter player conceded a penalty in added time in the process, which Anthony Stokes scored to level the game.
Stokes had the ball in the net again before the final whistle, but the linesman flagged for the ball first curling out of play from the corner delivery.
Lennon feels Accies' goal should not have stood as Canning was interfering with play in an offside position when the initial cross came into the Celtic box.
"From what I gather he's blocking the view of my goalkeeper and maybe two or three yards offside," Lennon told BBC Scotland.
"The linesman is quick to see the corner that goes out for Stokes' goal at the end, but he can't see a blatant offside. Staggering."
In an incident-packed game, Celtic's Niall McGinn was also booked for simulation in the second half when he went down in the box and his team claimed for a spot kick.
Lennon was unequivocal about that incident.
"It was a penalty. A clear penalty," said the Celtic boss.
"There's no contact, Canning's not got the ball. He's taken Niall out and it's a penalty.
Despite narrowly avoiding defeat, Lennon gave a positive assessment of his team's display as they moved five points ahead of Rangers, who have three games in hand.
"I'm pleased with the performance. Just in the final third we were lacking some composure," said Lennon.
"The character and the football we played was very, very good against a team that didn't really want to come out and play at all.
"We have to tidy up in the final third. Defensively we're okay, but with the volume of possession we have we need to be more clinical on front of goal."
On Tuesday, Lennon was given a six-match ban for an outburst towards the fourth official, as he was sent to the stand during a match at Tynecastle in November.
That ban could be increased on Monday when it is expected that the SFA general purposes committee will examine comments the Celtic manager made after that match about the officials.
