Trivia

  • … and we shoot ourselves in the foot! Pitch was a disgrace with next to no grass on it, and more holes in each square yard than in a box of teabags.
  • Rangers won 4-0 and close gap to 5 points as well as 2 games in hand, the advantage back to them after our defeat!
  • Kayal out suspended/injured (both).
  • The end of a 17 match unbeaten run reaching back to November.

Review

The pitch was awful, the pen wasn't a pen, Forbes should have been sent off, Stokes wasted chances etc etc

Whatever.

We were pish today. Utterly disgraceful. No fight, no desire, no control, no creativity. We deserved what we got, a defeat. Their keeper handled whatever half-chances we had very well, and our midfield, defence and keeper couldn't withstand a breeze. Hooper and Commons got nothing, and when they did they had poor touches or bad passes.

Sammy did nothing, Ledley tried to get the passing going but couldn't defend for toffee. Stokes may aswell have stayed at home. Charlie was pish. Big Dan back to a bombscare. No dig from Ki. Scott Brown back to heedless chicken. Forster couldn't catch a cold. Forrest did less than nothing. Poor, poor, poor game from Izzy. Juarez is slow and lazy.

Commons was our best player ONLY, and I mean ONLY, because he had a couple of decent digs.

Lenny's got a lot to answer for here, and I hope he gives the whole team a boot in the nads for this. NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Celtic's title hopes were jolted by a John Sutton double that gave Motherwell an unlikely win over the Premier League leaders on a dramatic afternoon at Fir Park.

The Motherwell striker pounced in the second minute after hesitation between Charlie Mulgrew and the goalkeeper Fraser Forster to knock the ball into an empty net. Celtic recovered to take control of the game but at the start of the second half, after their left-back, Emilio Izaguirre, had been adjudged to have fouled the Motherwell captain Keith Lasley, Sutton drove in the penalty. Although TV pictures indicated the award was soft, Motherwell dug in to register their first home win over Celtic since 2005.

Celtic went into the game in fine form, unbeaten in 17 games, but they got off to a terrible start. Mulgrew and Forster both hesitated when Gavin Gunning sent a long, hopeful punt into the penalty area and Sutton nipped in to round the keeper.

The Hoops' response was swift and moments later Mark Wilson climbed high at the back post to reach a Kris Commons free-kick but headed over the bar.

Motherwell had half a chance when Jamie Murphy's cross from the left ended up with Chris Humphrey, but his angled shot from 14 yards was snatched and flew wide.

At the other end, with the home defence all over the place, Darren Randolph had to make a fine point-blank save from Anthony Stokes and seconds later the keeper threw himself down to his left to push a Scott Brown shot from distance past a post.

The start of the second half was as dramatic as the beginning of the first, with Sutton adding his second from a penalty within three minutes. Celtic failed to clear their lines after Shaun Hutchinson had headed a Ross Forbes corner against the bar and when Izaguirre tangled with Lasley, the referee pointed to the spot. Sutton drove the ball past Forster.

Celtic continued to pound the home side, who were forced in to some frantic defending. In the 54th minute Commons' long-distance free-kick beat the defensive wall and Randolph but rebounded off the keeper's right-hand post.

It was another escape but in a Motherwell breakaway, Murphy switched play to send Humphrey clear down the right only for the Well player to hesitate before getting his shot in and the ball struck Forster, who pounced on the loose ball.

Celtic continued to push forward but with less conviction and in the 71st minute Motherwell carved open another chance but Murphy's goal-bound shot from 12 yards was blocked by Sutton, who was trying to get out of the way.

In the first minute of added time Randolph tipped a Commons shot over the bar as Motherwell defended stoutly until the final whistle.

Motherwell 2-0 Celtic

By Clive Lindsay
Two goals from John Sutton ended Celtic's 17-match unbeaten run as Motherwell secured a deserved win over the Scottish Premier League leaders.

Sutton pounced on a mistake from Charlie Mulgrew to slide the home side into the lead after two minutes.

Darren Randolph saved well from Celtic captain Scott Brown before the break.

Shaun Hutchinson's header struck the bar before Emilio Izaguirre was ruled to have tripped Keith Lasley and Sutton scored from the 49th-minute penalty.

With Celtic suffering their first defeat since 10 November, title rivals Rangers reduced the gap at the top of the table to five points with a 4-0 win over St Johnstone.

Ending a run of five straight defeats by the visitors – and 11 games without a win over the Glasgow side – moves Motherwell five points clear of sixth-placed Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The home side had been forced to reorganise at the back, with Stevie Hammell coming in for the suspended Stephen Craigan.

Well manager Stuart McCall shored up his midfield by introducing Ross Forbes, with striker Francis Jeffers dropped to the bench.

Celtic's changes were in midfield and attack, with Ki Sung-Yueng replacing the suspended Beram Kayal and Anthony Stokes preferred to Georgios Samaras up front.

However, it was a nightmare start by Mulgrew in defence that led to Motherwell's opener after only two minutes.

First, Chris Humphrey pounced on the central defender's fresh-air attempt at a clearance, but Daniel Majstorovic managed to block the winger's shot as he bore down on goal.

Mulgrew then hesitated while hoping that goalkeeper Fraser Forster would come out to clear a long ball over the defender's head.

Instead, Sutton poked the ball past Foster before driving it into the unguarded net.

Celtic pressed forward and Mark Wilson headed powerfully over, but it was Motherwell who were next to put the ball in the net after 18 minutes.

Sutton latched on to Gunning's long ball, rounded Forster and rolled it into the net only to be ruled offside.

Motherwell went close again when a Jamie Murphy cross evaded the head of Sutton and the unmarked Humphrey rushed his first-time shot at the back post, slicing well wide.

Celtic, though, now had the territorial advantage and came close to equalising during a spell of intense pressure.

Stokes broke clear inside the box, but his low shot was blocked by the foot of goalkeeper Darren Randolph, who then sent a clever 18-yard curling drive from Scott Brown round the post with his outstretched hand.

Motherwell remained dangerous on the break and Murphy sent Humphrey sprinting clear from the halfway line only to be pulled back a hasty referee's whistle for Majstorovic's foul on Lasley at the other end.

Celtic's increasing pressure almost paid off in the dying seconds of the first half, but Shaun Hutchinson cleared a Stokes shot from in front of his own goal.

However, Motherwell made another whirlwind start after the break, with a Hutchinson header following a Forbes corner striking the underside of the crossbar before being cleared.

The home side's second eventually came from the penalty spot, when Emilio Izaguirre clipped the heels of Lasley and Sutton sent Forster the wrong way with his spot kick into the roof of the net.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon immediately hauled off Stokes and the injured Mark Wilson and brought on Samaras and Efraim Juarez.

The change almost coincided with a goal for the visitors, but Randolph did superbly to get a strong hand to Kris Commons' powerful 25-yard free-kick that curled towards the bottom corner.

Celtic continued to press and Commons had another curling effort well saved after Sutton and Humphrey both had chances on the break.

However, the two-goal advantage was retained as Motherwell completed their first win at Fir Park over the Glasgow side since May 2005.
