Trivia

  • Champions League 2012 – 13, Round 2
  • Celtic's first ever away win in the group stages of a European major tournament.
  • Celtic had lost 18 of previous 20 away matches on European away group stage matches apparently!
  • Celtic unbeaten in last seven European and five European away matches! A club record.
  • Celtic go ahead then come from behind to win. Samaras scores in 89th minute! What a game…
  • Shambolic performance by referee. Total farce. Celtic lost penalty claim that was blatant.
  • Samaras continues this baffling but great record of scoring for Celtic away in European matches yet can't do it domestically.
  • Former Celtic player McGeady in Spartak team.
  • Neil Lennon was asked strange questions in the press conference , such as by a Russian journalist if he would turn to Sean Connery if the club was in financial difficulty. Lennon later tweeted it was the one of the more bizarre press conferences that he's done.
  • Barcelona away next in Champions League. Barcelona top the group with six points. Celtic second on three, Benfica one, Spartak nil.
  • Old Rangers administrators state that HMRC's debt claim for voting share is a staggering £94.4m. Read that again, that is probably not the final figure.

Review

(cfc88 of KDS)
What a fantastic result, over the moon. Only saw the second half but from that we deserved at least what we got and they didn't look upto much, though a lot f that was down to our performance.

Lustig I thought was outstanding, Two centre backs were solid enough and Izzy continued as he started on Saturday. Midfield were all good, Brown was everywhere. And as Lennon mentioned, that fat Nando's eating, Sugercube loving striker of ours was fantastic.

Seriously thought Hooper was getting booked at the sending off incident. Not sure at all what made the ref change his mind cos he didn't have a clue at first.

Selection, subs absolutely spot on from Lennon, and he's getting all the praise he deserves. Cannot believe how far he has brought us in a relatively short space of time, he's worked wonders.

As for qualification, we're looking pretty good so far. Hopefully a draw in Moscow for Benfica and being realistic we'll get a couple taken off us. Benfica away is the one that will decide it IMO, take anything there and we'll go through in second, of not we'll have to avoid defeat in the last game for third.

Spartak Moscow 2-3 Celtic: Georgios Samaras bags historic victory for Scots

By Grant Russell 2 October 2012 18:51 BST
STV

Georgios Samaras' headed winner in the 90th minute against Spartak Moscow gave Celtic their first ever away win in the Champions League group stages.

Gary Hooper opened the scoring for the Scottish champions, with Dmitri Kombarov's own goal equalising the tie after Emmanuel Emenike had netted either side of half-time to give the Russians a 2-1 lead.

Juan Insaurralde was sent off for the hosts with the score at 2-1 to Spartak, pulling back Hooper when he was through on goal.

Celtic were good for their win after an indecisive start in the Luzhniki, catching Spartak cold with their first attack of the game.

Mikael Lustig found room on the right hand side, bombing forward from defence to latch onto Victor Wanyama's pass.

His low cross met the front post run of Hooper, who steered the ball across goal and past Sergei Pesyakov with 12 minutes on the clock.

Hooper had the ball in the net for a second time soon after, getting on the end of a chipped Samaras cross from inside the box on the left.

The Englishman however had just strayed too early and his header from close range was chalked off.

Kris Commons then had a shout for a penalty, having his heels clipped in the penalty area but seeing his claims waved away by referee Tony Chapron.

Spartak always looked dangerous moving the ball wide from the middle of the park, with Celtic's defence holding firm until the 41st minute.

Kim Kallstrom's diagonal ball from deep was brilliantly touched down by Ari on the right corner of the six yard box, his touch finding Emenike to turn in from close range.

The Nigerian striker again profited just two minutes after the result. Ari again was involved, his low shot parried by Fraser Forster wide into the path of Demy De Zeeuw, who nudged the ball back across goal to the back post, finding the run of Emenike to steer home unopposed.

Celtic were forced to be patient as Spartak got a foothold in the game, but they were given a way back into the game on the counter.

Hooper bore down Pesyakov just outside the area and, with the keeper advancing, Insaurralde clipped the striker's heels as he went to shoot for goal.

Referee Chapron initially waved away the Celtic man's claims but, following persuasion from one of his assistants, produced a red card for the Spartak defender and awarded the visitors a free-kick which came to nothing.

The numerical advantage allowed Celtic more time on the ball in the middle of the park, with Scott Brown and Kris Commons pulling the strings and retaining possession, waiting for gaps to open up in the wide areas.

It was Commons who started the move for his side's equaliser, threading the ball down the left touchline for Charlie Mulgrew to rush onto.

Playing in midfield for the night, Mulgrew looked up and found Samaras at the near post. The forward, back after an arm injury, allowed the ball to run to Hooper, who turned and held the ball up waiting for the run of James Forrest, on just a minute earlier as a substitute, to come into play.

The young winger took up the invitation and fired in a shot which was blocked by goalkeeper Pesyakov, but only onto the knee of his defender Kombarov and into the net.

Spartak sat deep to repel wave upon wave of Celtic attacks but Neil Lennon's side were not to be denied a maiden away victory in the competition.

Again finding joy down the left flank, Emilio Izaguirre found room to send a swinging cross to the penalty spot and into the path of Samaras, who made a diagonal sprint towards the front post.

The cult hero rose highest to steer the ball to the far post, the ball bouncing just inside the net on the right with exactly 90 minutes on the clock to send the visiting supporters wild, and put Celtic top of the group, temporarily at least, with four points from their opening two matches.

Spartak Moscow 2 – 3 Celtic: Celtic in last-gasp win

The Scotsman

Published on Wednesday 3 October 2012 00:29

GEORGIOS Samaras’ last-gasp header gave Celtic a dramatic Champions League Group G

victory over 10-man Spartak as Neil Lennon’s men recorded a first away win in the group stages of the Champions League.

Scorers: Spartak Moscow – Emenike (41, 48); Celtic – Hooper (12), Kombarov (71, og), Samaras (90)
Bookings: Spartak Moscow – Insaurralde (sent off); Celtic – Mulgrew, Wanyama

Attendance: 31,000

Striker Gary Hooper put the visitors ahead in the 12th minute before Emmanuel Emenike netted twice for the Russian club, once either side of the break.

Spartak defender Juan Insaurralde was sent off just after the hour mark for fouling Hooper as the striker went clean through on goal.

Celtic levelled in the 72nd minute with an angled drive by substitute James Forrest, who had replaced Victor Wanyama, deflected in off Spartak captain Dmitri Kombarov and, to cap a remarkable night for the visitors, Samaras headed in an Emilio Izaguirre cross seconds after the regulation 90 minutes.

The Parkhead men had drawn 1-1 with Spartak on their artificial turf in a Champions League play-off game in 2007 but this time they went one better and it was Samaras who came up with the goods.

There was little surprise that the Greece striker returned to the starting XI, with Forrest starting on the bench. Samaras, a favourite of Lennon, made a substitute appearance in the 2-0 Clydesdale Bank Premier League win over Motherwell on Saturday after recovering from an elbow injury.

Former Celtic winger Aiden McGeady returned to the Spartak midfield after being rested for the 3-1 league win over Amkar. The home side forced three corners in the first three minutes, a spell of pressure ending when Swedish midfielder Kim Kallstrom barged his way into the Celtic box before firing high over the bar.

Spartak had lost the services of goalkeeper Andriy Dykan to injury, his place taken by

Sergei Pesyakov. But he had little chance with Hooper’s well-taken goal, which stemmed from

Kallstrom’s timidness in a 50-50 tackle with Wanyama. The powerful midfielder played the ball wide to right-back Mikael Lustig to deliver low for the former Scunthorpe striker to clip the ball in from around six yards.

The Scottish champions retained a threat going forward and, in the 24th minute, Hooper had the ball in the Spartak net again, this time with a header from a Samaras cross, only to see the flag up for offside.

In the 34th minute, Emenike was on the end of a Evgeni

Makeev cross but headed high over the bar from ten yards. Moments later, Samaras had a decent chance when Kris Commons flighted a free-kick on to his head, but the big Greek failed to make good contact and

Pesyakov gathered.

It looked like Lennon’s side would take a lead into the interval but, four minutes from the break, Emenike knocked the ball past Forster from close range after being set up by Ari, who had latched on to a delightful long ball by Kallstrom. Emenike grabbed his second three minutes into the second period. Forster spilled Ari’s drive and Demy de Zeeuw pounced to play the ball across goal for the Nigeria striker to tap in. It looked a difficult task for Celtic, but they had a chance to level in the 58th minute when Charlie Mulgrew’s free-kick from the right found the head of stopper Efe Ambrose, but he missed the target.

There was some needless controversy surrounding Insaurralde’s dismissal. The Spartak defender hauled Hooper back as he raced through on goal from Mulgrew’s pass but, at first, French referee Tony Chapron played on, then, after presumably taking some instruction from one of his officials, he showed the

Argentine the red card.

Mulgrew’s free-kick, when it was eventually taken, was punched away by Pesyakov, who dealt comfortably with Emilio Izaguirre’s volley from the rebound. But there was more drama to come in the 72nd minute when Forrest’s angled shot from 12 yards, after good work by Samaras and Hooper, was saved by Pesyakov before going in off Kombarov.

Pesyakov made a good fingertip save from Joe Ledley, who had replaced Mulgrew, and the keeper saved again from Hooper. But, with the game in added time, Samaras rose to head

Izaguirre’s cross into the far corner of the net.

Spartak Moscow: Pesiakov, Insaurralde, Pareja, Rafael Carioca, McGeady (Dzjuba 76 ), De Zeeuw (Bryzgalov 65), Kallstrom, Kombarov, Makeev, Ari (Kozlov 87), Emenike. Subs: Rebrov, Bryzgalov, Kombarov, Bilyaletdinov, Dzjuba, Yakovlev, Kozlov.

Celtic: Forster, Izaguirre, Ambrose, Wilson, Mulgrew (Ledley 80), Lustig, Brown, Commons, Wanyama (Forrest 70), Samaras, Hooper. Subs: Zaluska, Rogne, Ledley, Kayal, Forrest, Miku, Watt

An injury-time goal from striker Georgios Samaras gave Celtic a historic first away win in the group stages of the Champions League.

Gary Hooper put the visitors in front on 12 minutes before tap-ins by Emmanuel Emenike either side of half-time put Spartak Moscow 2-1 up.

After Juan Insaurralde was sent off for a professional foul on Hooper, Dmitri Kombarov's own goal drew Celtic level.

Samaras headed home Emilio Izaguirre's cross in the 90th minute.

Neil Lennon's side now lie second in Group G on four points, with the Russians pointless after two matches.

The win, their first group stage victory on the road in 19 attempts, sets Celtic up for a double header against Spanish giants Barcelona, starting at Camp Nou on 23 October.

Spartak set their stall out early on and tried to catch their visitors off guard with a series of crosses and corners.

Emenike's double had given Spartak the lead

But Celtic endured the pressure and took the lead with their first attack of the game, started with Victor Wanyama's forceful play in midfield.

Mikael Lustig was released on the right and Hooper got in front of Nicolas Pareja to convert the Swede's low cross.

Lennon's side soon found themselves defending in numbers again, one drive from former Celtic winger Aiden McGeady diverted out for a corner.

But Spartak were vulnerable to counter attacks, with wide men Kris Commons and the fit-again Samaras able to make ground on the artificial surface.

Hooper had the ball in the net again with a header from a Samaras cross but the goal was ruled out for offside.

A free-kick around 25 yards out gave Spartak a chance to level but Pareja's curling effort was kept out by a diving Fraser Forster.

However, the home side's next attack produced the equaliser, Emenike scoring from close range after Ari cut the ball back from Kim Kallstrom's perfectly weighted ball in behind Kelvin Wilson.

Another close-range finish by Emenike edged the hosts in front just after the break.

Forster should perhaps have done better than parry Ari's low strike into the path of Demy de Zeuww, who turned the ball back across goal for Emenike to touch home.

Spartak went down to 10 men when Insaurralde's pull on Hooper eventually resulted in a red card for the Argentine defender, French referee Tony Chapron overturning his own decision to let play continue after taking advice from one of his assistants.

After Spartak had taken off midfielder de Zeuww and sent on Sergei Bryzgalov to shore up the defence, Charlie Mulgrew's effort from the resulting free-kick was punched away by Sergei Pesiakov.

Lennon also made a change, with James Forrest replacing Wanyama and playing a crucial role in Celtic's second.

Samaras dummied Mulgrew's cross for Hooper, who set up Forrest on the right-hand side of the box.

The winger's shot was blocked by a foot of keeper Sergei Pesiakov but ricocheted into the net off Kombarov.

Celtic continued to press and snatched a deserved victory when Samaras looped a header past Pesiakov.

Neil Lennon hails 'magnificent' Celtic after win in Moscow
BBC

Manager Neil Lennon said he was "probably the proudest man in Europe" after Celtic's 3-2 Champions League victory over 10-man Spartak Moscow.

"I cannot speak highly enough of the players, they were magnificent," he enthused.

"They showed great character and fortitude to come back after going behind just after half-time.

"People underestimate Celtic. I don't think we get the respect we deserve but that might change a few attitudes."
Play media

An injury-time header from Greek striker Georgios Samaras gave Celtic their first ever away win in the group stages of the Champions League.

They now lie second in Group G on four points, two adrift of leaders Barcelona.

Gary Hooper put the visitors in front on 12 minutes before Emmanuel Emenike scored for Spartak with close-range finishes either side of the interval.

After Spartak defender Juan Insaurralde was sent off on 63 minutes for a cynical trip on Hooper, Celtic levelled 10 minutes later when a strike from substitute James Forrest rebounded in off Dmitri Kombarov.

Then Samaras found the net late on to give the Scottish Premier League side a famous victory.

"I thought we thoroughly deserved to win it," said Lennon. "We didn't start particularly well, we looked a bit nervous and our passing wasn't there for the first five or 10 minutes, but we scored a good goal.
Celtic manager Neil Lennon

Lennon salutes the band of Celtic fans at the Luzhniki Stadium

"I thought Gary Hooper was world class tonight. I thought he was just magnificent and the catalyst for a lot of good things we did.

"People keep asking me about him playing for England. Well, I think he showed how good he is."

Lennon was also keen to praise the rest of his players, but he insisted qualification for the knock-out stages was still a tough ask.

"It is our first away win in the Champions League, so we have broken a record," he said. "It is fantastic, but there is a lot of football to be played in the group."

Celtic's next two games are against Spanish giants Barcelona, the first taking place at Camp Nou on 23 October.

"It is still an open group for second place as far as I am concerned," said Lennon. "We are still novices in this tournament, but a few more performances like that wouldn't do us any harm at all."
