Trivia

  • Celtic win Scottish Cup for 36th time.
  • Celtic achieve the league and cup double. Lennon becomes third Celt after Stein and McNeil to win domestic league and cup double both as manager and player for the club.
  • First domestic Scottish match to employ officials behind the goals. They have been used in European competition in recent seasons.
  • Celtic designated the 'away' team and therefore wore the all-black away kit.
  • Paddy McCourt subbed on for last few minutes and awarded the captain's armband.
  • First cup winners medals for Wilson, Lustig, Ambrose, Ledley and Rogic.
  • With the 2014 Commonwealth Games on the horizon, work will soon begin on the national stadium, meaning the cup games will be held elsewhere in the coming seasons.
  • Game moved to Sunday from the traditional Saturday due to the European Cup match the day before (no major games allowed on same day).
  • Stan Petrov who is battling leukaemia, present at the match to support Celtic.
  • European Cup final the night before between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium London, Bayern win 2-1.
  • Tenth anniversary of Celtic in UEFA Cup final passed on 21st May; ironically Porto manager from that day (Jose Mourinho) was fired from/mutually left his current job as Real Madrid manager the night before despite some great achievements with them (not very popular with the very greedy fans there).
  • Official Champions League final programme selects six of the best young prospects from this year's competition… Varane (Real Madrid), Isco (Malaga), Verratti (PSG), Rodriguez (Porto), El Shaarawy (Milan) and Victor Wanyama…
  • Tensions high in the UK after brutal killing of army man in Woolwich (England) by self-styled Islamic extremists. Disturbingly, NewCo Rangers fans misread a banner flown at the Celtic game as "Islam CSC" and interpreted it in a sick manner, it actually read clearly "Achill Island CSC"! It was a sick low for some Hun supporters, as both there is no issue with Islam from Celtic (or should there be), and showed up the blatant racist element that continues to dog NewCo Rangers having taken on their old fans. They have signed an Irish Catholic now (John Daly) from Dundee Utd, so interesting to see how he is treated.
  • The old Hun self-styled supremacy (sic!) club is dead and two clubs founded by Irish immigrants in the 19th century turned Hampden green & white.
  • Part of the match programme is 3D. And there are nice glasses too.

Terrific professional performance. We never really moved out of third, but third was comfortably too much for them. Hibs are shampooe, end of. Any nerves before this game were totally unjustified, but such is the nature of football!

This team are a classy bunch when Brown is involved and the attitude is correct. Better than Strachan's teams I think.
The front 2 showed they are both genuine quality. Brown exudes energy and is the real driving force behind this team. Ledley's 10 goals This season, many of them in important games, highlight how big a player he is for us. The goalscoring midfielder is a really asset!

I think Lenny will stay. I hope he does.

Last but not least, the fans were immense today from start to finish. Noisy, colourful, proud, huddling…
I don't get people saying the Hibs fans were Barry white. I though they were fine. Noisy at times. In fact large swathes, myself included, were applauding them at the end. Although I'm guessing for many of them it was their first game of the season.

Terrific day all round. Onwards and upwards. Better it next season Celtic! Post match celebrations somewhat dampened by tomorrow's AH physics exam looming large…

Not the best we've ever played but still more than enough for Hibs. I didn't like whatever formation we were playing, Ledley was too far in at times and Commons was caught in the middle with Hooper and Stokes rather than one of them peeling wide, leaving Izzy exposed. The times Stokes was in that position he more than delivered: two excellent crosses for Hooper and an overall fantastic workrate to get back and defend as well. Very pleased for Anthony "isn't trusted in big games" Stokes. Hooper was back to his best imo. Some great movement and link-up play with Stokes and Commons, and should've had his hattrick. The goals he did score were very well taken, especially for a guy that isn't that great at heading. Lustig was exposed at times because James Forrest didn't show-up, and he dealt well with what he had to do the majority of the time. Kelvin and Charlie looked nervy a couple of times but a solid overall performance. Izzy is getting more like his old self with every game.

Last, but not least, Broony: I love this guy a little bit more every time I see him play. Skill, determination, drive, nerve, and not afraid to get in folks' faces. Held that midfield together despite some weird formations. Stokesy was brilliant today, but my MOTM was Broony.

Oh Captain, my Captain.

Celtic 3-0 Hibernian: Gary Hooper helps Celtic seal the domestic double

Gary Hooper celebrates after giving Celtic the early lead.SNS Group

Gary Hooper's first-half double helped Celtic to a comfortable William Hill Scottish Cup final win over Hibernian at Hampden Park which completed the domestic double for Neil Lennon's side.

The game turned in favour of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League champions as early as the seventh minute when Hoops keeper Fraser Forster made a great save from a close-range Eoin Doyle header.

Hooper ran up the park moments later and scored the first of two almost identical goals, both coming from Anthony Stokes crosses, with midfielder Joe Ledley sealing the win with a 79th-minute strike.

For Hibs, who were thrashed 5-1 in last year's final by Edinburgh rivals Hearts, their quest to win the competition for the first time since 1902 limps painfully on.

Their fans put up a show of defiance in the final stages but left Glasgow wondering what might have happened if Doyle, playing his last game before moving to Chesterfield, had scored his early chance.

The afternoon started positively enough for the Easter Road side who were without skipper James McPake, ruled out on Friday with a back complaint.

The Leith side, full of enthusiasm and vigour, should have taken the lead when left-back Ryan McGivern put the ball on to the head of Doyle eight yards from goal but the Irishman's header was brilliantly saved by Forster.

Hibs paid for that only a minute later when right-back Alan Maybury only half-cleared Mikael Lustig's cross from the right with the ball being picked up wide on the left by Stokes.

The former Hibs striker turned and sent an inviting cross to the back post which evaded Easter Road stand-in skipper Ben Williams with Hooper confidently volleying into the net.

Celtic, playing in all black, took control of the game thereafter.

A fine pass from Hoops midfielder Kris Commons on the half-hour mark opened up the Hibs defence and found Ledley but Williams made a good save from the drive before the Leith side cleared their lines.

However, the Hoops' second goal was only moments away and came when Stokes' cross from the left again found

Hooper at the back post and he headed it back across Williams and into the corner of the net.

Hibs looked deflated as they surveyed the task ahead.

Leigh Griffiths had half a chance in the 37th minute when a long ball from midfielder Kevin Thomson caught out the Parkhead defence but although the on-loan Wolves striker went past Forster, the angle was too tight and his attempted shot went across the goal with no real prospect of sneaking in.

Stokes almost got on the scoresheet himself in the 52nd minute with a right-footed drive from the edge of the box which fizzed just past the far post.

Amid an early second-half surge from Hibs, Celtic skipper Scott Brown and Hibees midfielder Jorge Claros were both booked for a spat that had several players from both sides excited.

There was little urgency, though, from the Parkhead side although they retained enough of a threat to suggest another goal was at their finger tips if required.

Hibs looked powerless to do anything about their plight.

Danny Handling replaced Doyle, Ross Caldwell came on for Thomson and Georgios Samaras took over from Commons by which time the game was petering out.

Ledley brought the Celtic fans back to life, though, when, from 14 yards, he converted a cross from Lustig which had been missed by Hooper for his hat-trick.

That was the signal for the Celtic fans to begin their celebrations in earnest as the Hibs support pondered another missed opportunity to exorcise their Scottish Cup ghost of 1902.

(Reuters) – A classy double from Gary Hooper helped Celtic beat Hibernian 3-0 to lift the Scottish Cup for the 36th time at Hampden Park on Sunday.

Hooper broke the deadlock after just eight minutes with his 30th goal of the season and he doubled his side's advantage just after the half hour with another smart finish from close range.

Joe Ledley rounded off the scoring towards the end of the second half.

The loss means Hibs' wait for a first Scottish Cup triumph since 1902 continues. It was their 11th final defeat.

Unlike last year's 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Edinburgh rivals Hearts, however, they started with intent, with Eoin Doyle forcing Celtic keeper Fraser Forster into a sharp save early on.

They failed to capitalise on that bright opening, however, allowing Hooper to volley the ball home at the far post after the Hibs defence failed to clear and allowed Anthony Stokes to provide a perfectly weighed cross.

Hooper repeated the dose after 31 minutes, evading two defenders to nod home another fine ball from Stokes.

Hibs, missing injured captain James McPake, came from 3-0 down at halftime to beat Falkirk 4-3 in their semi-final but were unable to muster another great comeback on this occasion.

They had the odd bright spell in the second half but never seriously threatened Forster's goal and Celtic added a third through Ledley on 80 minutes.

The win was Celtic's first domestic double since 2007, having easily won the Scottish Premier League with a 16 point margin, and rounds off a memorable season that saw them defeat Barcelona in the Champions League group stage.

Gary Hooper scored twice as Celtic clinched their 36th Scottish Cup and with it a domestic double.

Anthony Stokes created both of Hooper's first-half goals as Neil Lennon's side effectively ended the game as a contest before the break.

Hibernian failed to threaten a comeback and Joe Ledley's late strike dispelled any lingering doubts over the outcome.

It means the Edinburgh side's long wait for Scottish Cup success continues after a second successive final defeat.
Gary Hooper opened the scoring

Hooper's first-half brace put Celtic in control

In fact, they had made the brighter start to the match and might have been in front but for a fantastic Fraser Forster save from Eoin Doyle's header.

That, though, was to prove a high point for Pat Fenlon's men as a moment of lax defending shortly afterwards handed Celtic the initiative.

Alan Maybury's weak clearance allowed Stokes possession on the left and he used it to fire a cross beyond the back post.

Goalkeeper Ben Williams could not reach it and, with Paul Hanlon and Ryan McGivern ball-watching, Hooper gleefully side-footed in from a narrow angle.

With their side having allowed the Scottish Premier League champions to score so early, the Hibs fans may have been fearing the worst, but the Edinburgh team did not buckle, with Tom Taiwo snapping into tackles and spraying passes to good effect in midfield.

Nonetheless, Celtic were able to carve out the better opportunities and Williams did well to block from Ledley after the Welshman had been picked out by a delicious Kris Commons pass.

Hibs showed they had failed to learn any lessons from the opening goal by conceding a very similar second – Stokes crossing from deeper this time and Hooper again finding room between Hanlon and McGivern to head back across the wrong-footed Williams for his 31st goal of the season.

Celtic, in the shape of Scott Brown and the front trio of Hooper, Stokes and Commons, had all of the game's top performers, with Hibs's talisman Leigh Griffiths unable to make any impact on the match.

The second period, aside from a fiery confrontation between Brown and Jorge Claros, was largely incident-free, with Hibs unable to muster anything resembling a shot on goal.

Hooper might have bagged a cup final hat-trick when Mikael Lustig rolled the ball into his path, but the striker uncharacteristically mis-kicked, only for the ball to fall to Ledley, who unleashed a powerful drive into Williams's top corner.

The three-goal winning margin was an entirely accurate reflection of a match in which Hibs showed plenty of endeavour, but Celtic had too much in the way of attacking threat and ended worthy victors.

Defeat means Hibs have not lifted the Scottish Cup since 1902 and their previous attempt to end that long wait ended in a dismal 5-1 hammering at the hands of city rivals Hearts in last season's final.

Scottish Cup final: Celtic deserve more credit, says Neil Lennon

Neil Lennon hopes Celtic will get more credit after they completed the double by lifting the Scottish Cup following a 3-0 victory over Hibernian at Hampden.

The Bhoys manager believes the financial demise of rivals Rangers has overshadowed his side's achievements.

"People have nipped away at what we've done over the years, the tainted titles, no competition," he said.

"And they've missed what's really on the pitch. We've got a really special young team here."

“That's four trophies in three years. Martin O'Neill did that, so I'm happy with that. To emulate what he did in his first three years is pretty special to me”

Neil Lennon Celtic manager

Celtic eased to their 36th Scottish Cup final triumph thanks to two first-half goals from Gary Hooper and a late third from Joe Ledley.

"They should get the respect they deserve now because they've been fantastic," Lennon told BBC Scotland.

"They've been at the sharp end all season – this is their 59th game – and they looked as fresh as daisies."

Lennon has yet to settle his own future with major shareholder Dermot Desmond and chief executive Peter Lawwell but hopes to remain in charge next season.

"Mr Desmond's here, Peter's here, maybe we'll have a wee chat later," he said.

"It's always the same this time of the season. I just wanted to get through today and we've done that.

"You never tire of days like this. To win the double as a manager and as a player is pretty special.

"It's going to be hard to emulate that next season."

Lennon admitted that, despite his side going into the game as strong favourites, the prospect of matching the achievement of his former manager at Celtic, Martin O'Neill, had added to the tension.

Interview – Celtic manager Neil Lennon

"I feel great now," he said. "I felt awful all day. I was really nervous, the stomach churning, butterflies, all that sort of thing.

"Just the weight of expectancy and history really and I knew how much it meant to Hibs to win the Cup today.

"I really wanted to get over the line with this one. That's four trophies in three years.

"Martin did that, so I'm happy with that. To emulate what he did in his first three years is pretty special to me."

Lennon described the performances of Hooper, strike partner Anthony Stokes, who set up both of Hooper's goals, and captain Scott Brown as "immense".

And of his team's display, he said: "I'm really proud. They were quality."

The Celtic manager had a few words of consolation for Hibs, whose best chance came early on through Eoin Doyle as the Edinburgh side sought to end an 111-year wait to win the Scottish Cup.

"Doyle had a great header saved in the first three minutes," added Lennon, stressing that the result had not been a foregone conclusion.

"You've got to give credit to the Hibs supporters. They got behind their team all day and, even at 3-0, they were fantastic."

Misread Achill Celtic Supporters flag causes quite a stir after being mistaken for Islamic banner

An Achill Island Celtic banner caused a quite a stir yesterday after a lot of silly, silly people mistook it for an Islamic banner.

By Eoghan Doherty

Celtic were deservedly crowned Scottish Cup champions yesterday after a brace from Gary Hooper and a third from Joe Ledley bagged a 3-0 win over Pat Fenlon’s Hibernian.

That, however, was not the story of the day, as a banner from the Achill Island Celtic Supporters Club got quite an incredible reaction after it was misread by a number of people who can’t read.

As the Celtic players made their way around the ground to celebrate in front of their fans, one (sort of) eagle-eyed viewer spotted this particular banner draped over the advertising boards. The rest, as they don't say, is social networking history.

News of this supposed "anti-British" banner spread and soon the banner was being slammed by the EDL of all people. Muppets.

It’s also incredibly important to mention at this point that Islam, one of the world's foremost religions, is in no way a crime, in spite of a lot of the subsequent over-the-top reactions indicating otherwise.

Have a look at the TV image below which was tweeted by banner owner, Paula Murphy.

What the banner actually says is “Achill Island C.S.C.” but, due to a slight crease, a number of people thought that it said “Achill Islam C.S.C.”

Here’s the actual banner in all of it’s uncreased glory:

What it did inevitably spark though are some very funny responses, some of which you can see below.
