Review

(Hagi Bhoy of KDS forum)
First half of near total domination but few clear cut chances. Second half we started a little bit low key and their goal gave us a bit of a kick up the arse. By the end of the game it was just the final ball that was stopping us from making it 4 or 5.

I quite liked the width we got from Matthews and Derk Bo both hugging the touch line before coming inside. The only problem I see is that we have a lack of height and presence in the box at times when we throw it in.

At the back Ambrose, Van Dijk and Lustig continue to look solid while izzy played ok but still looks suspect at crosses. In fact I think if we have a weakness at the back it's attacking the ball when defending free kicks and corners and long throws. I'm pretty sure Ambrose or Van Dijk are going to score an epic goal after jinking past three or four bodies at some point this season. The two of them offered more attacking intent than Brown or Ledley for most the game!

So far this season I think we've looked a better team than we were last season and we've a much better balance to our game. Bring on Milan!

Hearts 1-3 Celtic

Celtic new signing Teemu Pukki grabbed a debut goal as the Hoops overcame Hearts 3-1 in their Scottish Premiership clash at Tynecastle

Kris Commons scored from the spot in the 18th minute after Gorgie midfielder Jamie Hamill was controversially penalised for handball before Jason Holt equalised in the 56th with a deflected drive from the edge of the box.

Anthony Stokes put Celtic back in front after 65 minutes with an unstoppable volley from 12 yards before substitute Pukki, who replaced Commons, made it 3-1 five minutes from time to make a perfect start to his Hoops career following his move from Schalke 04.

It was a good work-out for the champions ahead of their opening Champions League fixture against AC Milan in the San Siro on Wednesday night.

Hearts remain bottom of the table on minus eight points as they try to recover from the 15-point penalty for lapsing into administration but boss Gary Locke can be happy with the effort from his
players.

Finland international Pukki could only find a place on the Hoops bench as Neil Lennon kept an unchanged side from the one that won at Dundee United.

Jambos' skipper Danny Wilson and defender Kevin McHattie both returned from league suspension.

It was a youthful Hearts side which struggled to cope with Celtic's confident start to the game.

However, in the fifth minute, after Hoops left-back Emilio Izaguirre was penalised by referee Willie Collum for handball 25 yards from goal, Fraser Forster had to dive to his right to beat away McHattie's free-kick which was sneaking in at the far post.

The visitors still looked in control and came close in the 13th minute when Derk Boerrigter's cross on the run from the left was volleyed over the bar by Commons.

Celtic got the breakthrough when Collum pointed to the spot after adjudging Hamill to have handled as he challenged Stokes following a corner by Commons.

The former Kilmarnock player, who was only available after successfully appealing the red card he picked up against Inverness for deliberate hand ball in conceding a penalty before the international break, was shocked.

It did not look as if he could have got out of the way of the ball but after receiving a yellow card, his frustration was compounded when the former Nottingham Forest player drove the penalty past Jamie MacDonald.

The champions took a tighter grip on proceedings as the home fans turned on Collum.

Stokes had the ball in the Jambos net in the 27th minute when he followed up on a Commons cross but was ruled offside.

However, that disappointment served only to cajole Lennon's side into stepping up their efforts.

In the 34th minute a powerful drive from Celtic midfielder Adam Matthews had MacDonald scrambling low to his left to make a good save with Jamie Walker completing the clearance.

Just before the break, a great saving tackle inside the Hearts box by McHattie on Matthews, which led to the Wales international being replaced by forward Georgios Samaras with a Celtic reshuffle ensuing, prevented the visitors almost certainly doubling their lead.

There was a more insipid start to the second-half and there was an element of fortune with Hearts' leveller.

McHattie's shot from outside the box was cleared only to Holt whose drive took a deflection before nestling behind Forster, whose attempted save with his foot was futile.

Samaras turned a Stokes cross over the bar from close range within seconds of the restart and the goal seemed to shake Celtic out of their slumber.

And when Commons sent Stokes through with a clever header, the Irishman took a good touch before thrashing the ball past MacDonald from 12 yards, before picking up a booking for his celebrations.

As Celtic turned the screw, MacDonald made a good save from an Izaguirre drive before Samaras missed another good chance in the 72nd minute, knocking Boerrigter's cross wide of the target from a couple of yards out.

In between, Pukki replaced Commons and when he was set up brilliantly by Stokes with five minutes remaining he could do little more than head into the corner of the net to seal the win.

Anthony Stokes scored one goal and set up two more as Celtic showed sufficient class to overcome Hearts' youthful enthusiasm at Tynecastle.

Hearts strongly contested the 19th-minute penalty tucked away by Kris Commons after Stokes' header struck the hand of defender Jamie Hamill.

Jason Holt's low drive levelled the game 13 minutes after the break.

But Stokes fired Celtic back in front then teed up Teemu Pukki for a headed third on his debut from the bench.

It was the reigning champions' third straight domestic away win and stretched their unbeaten run to four games since losing the first leg of their Champions League qualifier against Shakhter Karagandy.

The three points took the second-placed Celtic level on points with Inverness Caledonian Thistle ahead of the Highlanders' visit to Kilmarnock.

And they were rewarded for Celtic manager Neil Lennon fielding a strong, unchanged side despite the proximity of Wednesday's Champions League group stage opener away to AC Milan.

There was also a continuation of the fine form shown by Scott Brown with Scotland as he dictated early play from midfield balanced heavily in favour of the visitors.

Celtic's flowing football was easy on the eye, but Hearts' defence, outclassed by leaders Inverness before the international break, had been bolstered by suspension-free Danny Wilson and Kevin McHattie and were preventing clear-cut chances.

Hearts looked lively on the break and, a free-kick having been won wide on the right, McHattie's whipped ball into the six-yard box was pushed nervously clear by goalkeeper Fraser Forster as it curled towards the far corner.

Dutch winger Derk Boerrigter was firing some dangerous crosses into the Hearts penalty box and one found Commons in space 12 yards out, but the volley powered well over the crossbar.

Home striker Callum Paterson was left bloodied by a forearm smash into his nose from Stokes that referee Collum ruled was accidental.

Hearts were seeing red again minutes later when Hamill conceded a controversial penalty for the second game running.

The experienced midfielder had his red card against Inverness overturned as television footage showed it had struck his head.

There was no question this time that Stokes' header deflected off Hamill's arm after a bit of penalty box wrestling, but Hearts will argue it is was certainly not a deliberate movement towards the ball and debatable whether the effort was a threat to the goal.
Play media

Commons wrong-footed Jamie MacDonald from the penalty spot and soon turned provider with a precise low pass behind the defence that was tucked away by Stokes, but the striker was marginally offside.

MacDonald did well to palm away a powerful 20-yard drive from Matthews, but the full-back again shining as a midfielder was to hobble off soon after.

The Welshman was the victim of a superb last-gasp tackle from Wilson and could be a worry for Celtic's trip to Italy.

Hearts had been shot shy on their rare sights at goal, but that changed after the break when McHattie's effort was deflected to Holt on the edge of the box and Scotland Under-21 midfielder low drive through a sea of legs evaded Forster's outstretched toe.
Play media

Home joy only lasted six minutes as Commons' header pierced the Hearts rearguard and Stokes sped clear to poke the ball past MacDonald.

There were muted shouts for a penalty by the home side, but they never looked like recording a third straight home win against a side that has now fired 11 goals past them in the last three meetings.

Celtic's icing on the cake came when Stokes' clever flick over goalkeeper MacDonald gave recent signing Pukki the chance to mark his arrival moments earlier with a simple finish.
