Trivia

  • Scottish Cup, Fourth Round
  • Hat trick for Commons.
  • Record defeat matched for Hearts. Lennon describes it as best Celtic performance under him.
  • Celtic fans chanting in banter/humour: "When the Celts go up to lift the Scottish Cup….you'll be deid, you'll be deid!" (in reference to Hearts administration….)
  • Celtic out of all European competition, so concentration now on winning the double. Already out of the league cup.
  • Conundrum over our raft of strikers who are all misfiring. Very serious issue to address. Not one of the goals scored in today's bonanza were by any of our recognised forwards.
  • Kayal out with broken bone in his foot, out for 6-7 weeks.
  • All football overshadowed by off field due to the William Wallace / Bobby Sands banner by the Green Brigade at the AC Milan game.
  • UEFA charging Celtic over that banner, unsurprisingly. Number of charges is climbing up. Celtic release strong statement over it all.
  • Support arguing over it all, but most banging their heads off a brick wall on this with Green Brigade unwilling to concede (as are their critics).
  • Former Celtic managerial prospect Owen Coyle is third manager to be axed in Championship in season so far. We wish him the best.
  • Serious incident in Glasgow: on Friday night past a police helicopter crashed into the roof of a full pub(The Clutha). To time of writing nine reported dead and around 30 in hospital. Our condolences to all affected by this tragedy.
  • Minutes silence being held at all matches during weekend in Scotland. Black armbands worn at the Celtic match.
  • The first casualty to be named – Gary Arthur – was the father of Celtic women's team footballer Chloe Arthur. Our condolences to her and her family.

Apparently that's the biggest victory we've had over Hearts in our entire history.

Also, it's jointly the worst result in Hearts history as well (alongside a 7-0 defeat to Hibs in the 70's).

For a man who was once attacked on the touchline at Tynecastle, Neil Lennon has got to be enjoying that more than anyone.

Hearts 0 – 7 Celtic: Hoops rout Jambos in cup
The Scotsman
CELTIC romped through to the William Hill Scottish Cup fifth round with a 7-0 humiliation of Hearts at Tynecastle, handing the Gorgie side their biggest defeat in 40 years.

The cup holders were knocked out of Europe with a 3-0 Champions League defeat to AC Milan at Parkhead on Tuesday night and they took their frustrations out on the Jambos to lead 5-0 at half-time with a Kris Commons brace and goals from skipper Scott Brown, Joe Ledley and Mikael Lustig.

A one-sided contest continued after the break as Commons completed his hat-trick in the 58th minute from the spot with Brown grabbing his second – and the Hoops’ seventh – in the 74th minute with a volley from the edge of the box.

The holders will be the side everyone will want to avoid in Monday’s draw for the next round while the Jambos, who lost 7-0 at home to rivals Hibernian in 1973, must lick their wounds and hope the thrashing does not have too much affect on their bid to stave off relegation from the Scottish Premiership.

Neil Lennon had promised changes after Celtic’s midweek disappointment in Europe.

Brown, fellow midfielders Nir Biton and Ledley and striker Anthony Stokes came into the Hoops side with Georgios Samaras and Derk Boerrigter dropping to the bench and injured James Forrest and Beram Kayal missing out altogether.

The Jambos showed one change from last week’s 2-2 Scottish Premiership draw with Ross County as David Smith came in for Callum Tapping, who started among the substitutes.

Before the game there was a well-observed minute’s silence for those who died as a result of the helicopter crash in Glasgow on Friday night with both teams wearing black armbands.

Unusually for the visit of the Parkhead side, Tynecastle was not full to capacity with big gaps in the home stands evident, and those Jambos who stayed away made a good decision.

The visitors began their dismantling of Hearts in the third minute with a well-worked goal.

Ledley played a one-two with Stokes before sliding the ball through to Commons who took a touch before confidently drilling it past Gorgie keeper Jamie MacDonald and in off the far post.

The second goal came after Gorgie defender Kevin McHattie bundled Brown to the ground 25 yards from goal.

A quickly-taken free-kick from Charlie Mulgrew sent Commons clear and he hammered an angled drive high past the flailing MacDonald.

The Hoops were up and running.

At the other end a Callum Paterson drive was saved by Celtic keeper Fraser Forster, but Commons was going for his hat-trick and in the 26th minute his delightful chip from the edge of the box was tipped over by the stretching MacDonald at the expense of a corner, which the home side defended.

However, the third goal was inevitable and came just after the half-hour mark when a long Mulgrew pass found Stokes who cleverly laid the ball off for the supporting Ledley.

The Wales midfielder’s drive cannoned off the post via Jordan McGhee and out to Brown who had the easiest of tasks knocking it into an empty net.

The tie was over then but Celtic remained rampant.

Ledley helped himself to a goal in the 42nd minute when he finished off a sweeping move by knocking in a cross from right-back Mikael Lustig from close range.

The Sweden international got in on the act a minute later with a wonderful drive from 25 yards which beat MacDonald and crashed off the crossbar before bouncing over the line.

Celtic piled forward after the break and were awarded a penalty in the 57th minute when Hearts skipper Danny Wilson was adjudged by referee Willie Collum to have handled a Commons shot, and the Hoops forward completed his hat-trick by slamming the ball low past MacDonald.

Hearts were dispirited and demoralised when Brown drove in number seven from the edge of the penalty area after MacDonald had made a decent save from a low drive by Hoops substitute Teemu Pukki, on for Mulgrew.

The Hoops kept going as Hearts summoned what they had in their reserves to keep the score at seven, which they managed to do, albeit that consolation is miniscule.

Hearts: MacDonald, McGhee, McGowan, Wilson, McHattie, Robinson, Hamill (A King 79), Smith (McKay 45), Walker, Stevenson, Paterson. Subs not used: Carrick, B King, Tapping, Hamilton, Oliver.

Kris Commons' hat-trick helped Celtic trounce Hearts to progress to the last 16 of the Scottish Cup and soothe the pain of this week's European exit.

Commons' angled shot went in off the post before he netted a second after Charlie Mulgrew's quick thinking.

Celtic captain Scott Brown tapped in a third and Joe Ledley benefited from Mikael Lustig's cross to score again.

Lustig's screamer made it five, Commons scored a penalty and Brown completed Celtic's record win over Hearts.

It was an emphatic statement from Neil Lennon's side, who will hope the prospect of a league and cup double can serve as reasonable salve for a season that will be short of European competition once their meaningless remaining Champions League Group H game in Barcelona has been completed.

Their seven goals against Hearts did not include any from an out-and-out striker but Lennon, taking charge of his 200th Hoops game, said afterwards it was the best performance in his time at the helm.

For Hearts, the knock-on effects of the penalties issued for entering administration were plain to see.

A 15-point deduction in the Premiership was accompanied by a transfer embargo that has left manager Gary Locke having to pick from a young, inexperienced squad and that was the telling factor on this occasion.

Quite how the Tynecastle teenagers will recover from this thrashing will become evident when they travel to Tannadice to face Dundee United on Saturday.
Finish it!
Kris Commons

Neil Lennon bemoaned Celtic's profligacy versus Milan but his side scored with seven of their 11 shots on target at Tynecastle.

Commons' hat-trick began after a neat one-two between Anthony Stokes and Ledley saw the latter play him in to whip a shot across Jamie MacDonald and in off the post.

Signs of a Hearts collapse were not immediately evident, however, as Jamie Hamill whistled a drive wide from 20 yards.

The former Kilmarnock midfielder then had to block Nir Biton's effort at the other end before Commons struck again.

Having rippled one corner of MacDonald's net, the former Scotland international fizzed the ball into the other side following a quick free-kick by Mulgrew that caught Hearts unaware.

Callum Paterson then chose to shoot from 20 yards instead of playing in Ryan Stevenson, another opportunity the Jambos would rue not taking.

MacDonald tipped over Commons' wonderful chip to prevent a first-half hat-trick but the third goal was on its way.

A perfect long ball from Mulgrew was instantly controlled by Stokes in the box. The Irishman fed Ledley whose left-foot strike rebounded off the inside of the post and into the path of Brown to finish off.

Wales international Ledley did not have long to wait for a goal of his own, though, arriving at the back post to convert Lustig's swift centre.

And provider then turned scorer once again, in brilliant fashion, as Lustig's tremendous right-footed strike flew in via the underside of MacDonald's crossbar.

A slaloming run by Jamie Walker almost produced a Hearts consolation after the break before a slightly harsh decision by referee Willie Collum led to Celtic's sixth.

Danny Wilson's arm certainly connected with Commons' shot in the box but it looked unintentional. Commons stepped up to complete his hat-trick from the spot.

Brown's second of the afternoon completed the rout when his drive from the edge of the area deflected in off Jordan McGhee.
