Biog

Big defender from Ayrshire, who played for Celtic in the Youth Cup v. Hearts on 28 February 1985.

However, there was also interest from Rangers and Beattie chose the path of the dark side in April 1985. Made the hun first team but was hit by injuries and moved on to Doncaster Rovers in January 1987 as part of the deal for expensive flop Neil Woods.

In South Yorkshire Beattie fared little better and retired from the pro. game in 1989 aged just 21.

He returned to Stevenston and took a job as a social worker in the notorious Kerelaw school for problem children.

In 1996 it was reported that a third back operation had caused him to stop playing at 28, so he must have been active in 'Junior' circles. Pals McCoist, Durrant et al. turned up for his testimonial at Ardeer Thistle on 21 April 1996.

Bizarrely, quotes from Beattie often appeared in print corroborating TV chef Gordon Ramsey's Rangers 'career'. The craggy-faced celebrity was later revealed to have embarked on a Walter Mitty-style flight of fancy regarding his supposed footballing exploits.
