DetailsTitle: An Alphabet of the Celts: A Complete Who's Who of Celtic F.C.
Author: Eugene Macbride, Martin O'Connor, and George Sheridan
Player Homepage: Celtic Players
ReviewA remarkable book which is an absolute must have for any Celtic historian, statistician or anyone that wants to know the history. Before the net (and this website) it was the basis for anyone interested in searching on the history of Celtic players.
Details every player that played with Celtic from the foundations of the club to 1993 complete with an excellent write up and generally a photograph of the player. This is a magnanimous tome and represents hours and hours of painstaking research by the authors. It is getting harder and harder to track down but it is usually possible to pick up a second hand copy from those daft enough to sell it on here.
The only flaws are that it does not give honours won and the biogs can be too short. Some biogs are poor, such as on Willie Miller and Frank McAvenie. Many players are given too easy a write-up when more criticism could have been allowed, but that is all nit-picking. Regardless, it's a great piece of work.
An update to this book has long been needed but has yet failed to appear not through the unwillingness of people to take up the challenge of matching the depth of investigation carried out by the original authors but due to various contractual issues. If there are legends outside of the players and management of Celtic then MacBride, O'Connor and Sheridan are without a doubt in that club.
