Goalkeeper Robert Boyle’s brief Celtic career saw him make 10 league appearances for the Celts in his only season at the club (1912/13).

He signed for the Bhoys from junior outfit Cowie Wanderers at the beginning of the trophyless 1912/13 campaign and made his debut on 30th September 1912 in a 3-2 victory at Partick Thistle. He had a poor record in his time in goal, with just the one league shut-out match, conceding ten goals in those ten league matches.

Robert Boyle was said to have had a very poor match against Rangers in a Glasgow Cup Final at Hampden before 80k fans in October 1912, and was adjudged to have conceded two soft goals with Celtic losing 3-1. So the writing was likely on the wall but he was retained. His set of games was in two bursts, first in September-October 1912 and then given a second chance in March-April 1913. John Mulrooney took over in goals from him.

He left at the end of the season and joined Alloa. Celtic the season afterwards went on a golden period for the club in terms of honours, monopolising the league for much of the rest of the decade, but wartime was to begin and things were to never be the same again.

Robert Boyle was in time to move to the US and played professionally there, and then later served with the Canadian Field Artillery in France during the First World War.
