Biog

Arrived on trial with Alessandro Sanna in tow in July 1998. The trial had been set up by Eric Black and incoming manager Jo Venglos rubber-stamped the deals, furnishing the duo with three year contracts worth in excess of £100,000 p.a.

Cortani had risen through Roma's youth system to Primavera level (Manuel Blasi was in the same team) but had missed most of 1997/98 with a serious knee injury. Prior to this he had been well thought of and even trained with the first team. But after the injury Roma weren't sure and offered only a one-year deal which Marco thought he could better elsewhere: and so he did!

Made sporadic appearances in the new U21 League – Marco himself reports 8 in 98/99 followed by 12 in 99/00 – before injury cruelly struck to the same knee.

With mentor Enrico Annoni having left the club, Marco and Alessandro negotiated their release with one year remaining on their contracts. And despite reported interest from French cracks Metz, after 9 months out Marco returned to semi-pro football in the Rome region where he remains.

  • Interview "Marco could achieve much more by his experience at Celtic […] but has been slowed by a knee dancer." (sounds painful!)

"had changed something in me mentally, I thought it was not worth moving away from home so I continued to play between l'interregionale and l'Eccellenza Lazio."
