Celtic This Is Just The Beginning DVD

May 2011, Neil Lennon stands on the turf at Celtic Park and promises a packed house. “This Is Just The Beginning”. And this is the story of that beginning. The story of a team who were 15 points behind in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League title race and counted out as early as November…
The story of a manager who endured a vicious and sustained personal campaign of abuse whilst simply trying to do his job…

But it’s also the story of a club who headed towards their 125th birthday as the top team in the country. Overturning deficits, confounding expectations and playing some great football at the same time, Neil Lennon’s side roared to the finishing line in style. Here’s a host of Celtic heroes from Fraser Forster through Adam Matthews, Scott Brown, Beram Kayal, Victor Wanyama, Kris Commons, Georgios Samaras, Gary Hooper, Anthony Stokes, Joe Ledley and the players of the year James Forrest and Charlie Mulgrew plus many more for you to enjoy.

Written and Produced by the ubiquitous Gerry McDade, and narrated by Ian Crocker, it's a good 90 minute run through the League season's highlights and lowlights, a quick look at the season in Europe, but curiously, not a single mention of either national Cup competition.

All the goals and action are provided with commentary by Celtic TV and Sky, and the film is shot through with interviews with Charlie Mulgrew, Garyy Hooper, Scot Brown and James Forrest.

The thread running through the whole show though is the Neil Lennon story, starting from the bitter sweet end to last season ( Losing League, winning Cup) and focussing on Lennon's courage in the face of off-field death threats and violence. It's pleasing to note that these issues have been given decent coverage.

It's painful though watching through most of September and October, and the epochal "season making" 3-3 game at Rugby Park is given suitable billing.

The huns don't escape either, but little reference is made to their self inflicted troubles, rather a couple of lovely tongue in cheek references towards the end of the film.

Some " behind the scenes " pictures from Rugby Park, a sneak look at the Player of the Year awards, and a welcome appearance for both the Thai Tims and Vanessa give the film some perspective.

But where oh where are the cup defeats? We are all grown up, we can take it. Thery are a huge part of the season, and the Scottish Cup win at Tannadice was seen as a giant step in what might have been a history making year.

Without any reference to the Cups, except the Europa variety, this is only 2/3s of the story. I found that very annoying.

Otherwise, the usual well produced, nicely presented Celtic dvd. That lad McDade needs a better music library though.
