Review (by kevtic March 28th 2014)Magic Moments

Magic Moments is look back at 8 games, between 81 and 98, with our now defunct rivals Rangers. In order the games were:

League, Feb 81 – Charlie Nicholas’s first game against the huns and he scores 2 in a 3-1 comeback win after Derek Johnstone opened the scoring.

League Cup Final, Dec 82 – First time Celtic had won the League Cup in 8 years. A left foot shot from the edge of the box from Nicholas and a thunderbolt from McLeod gave Celtic a 2-0 half time lead in torrential rain. A Jim Bett free kick early in the 2nd half caused a few nerves but Celtic held on while their fans fought hypothermia.
League, May 83 – Last game of the season and also Charlie Nicholas’s last game in the hoops first time round. Celtic still had a slim chance of winning the league but had to win this game and wait to see if Dundee Utd dropped any points at Dens Park. At half time Celtic were 2-0 down but as the McNeill and Burns reminisce they heard the fans singing at half time and they destroyed the huns in the 2nd half to win 4-2. Sadly wasn’t enough to win the league though.
League, August 87 – Start of the centenary season and Billy Stark puts the hoops 1up after 4mins in what turned out to be the only goal. This game is also remembered for Souness’s assault on Stark when he only had one boot on. Souness was shown red and the sight of the Celtic fans celebrating his humiliation is one to behold.
Scottish Cup Final, May 89 – The Joe Miller Cup Final as Celtic stopped back to back trebles for the huns. How Roy Aitken got that throw in when he clearly puts the ball out is a complete mystery as the ref is only yards away. Anyway seconds later Stevens fluffs his passback and insteps wee Joe to bury it behind Woods. McCoist also misses an absolute sitter near the end and Butcher has a goal chopped off that was in the dodgy camp. Amazing, 2 decisions that went our way in a cup final against the hun. Truly an historic day.
Scottish Cup Mar 91 – Known as the St Patrick’s Day Massacre and amazingly no summit was called after this one. Celtic were 2 up at half time with goals from Creaney and a deflected free kick from Wdowczyk. It all kicked off in the 2nd half though. Grant was first to get an early bath before the animal that is Terry Hurlock soon followed for a forearm smash. The huns bath got quite crowded as Mark Walters and Mark Hateley arrived not long after.
It’s a pity they never included the game a week after when Celtic won 3-0 and Scott Nisbet was sent off and the Celtic crowd produced thousands of red cards provided by Not the View to wave him on his way.
League, Jan 98 – The stopping the 10 season and almost the whole season centred on this game. If Celtic lost there would be a massive 7pt gap to overcome. Celtic survived a solid penalty claim when Stubbs stuck out a foot and brought down Laudrup. Brattbakk also had a couple of great chances before Burley finally broke the deadlock then Lambert’s screamer sealed the win. First time Celtic had won the New Year’s derby for 10 seasons.
League, Nov 98 – Already the subject of its own DVD in 5 Star Bhoys. The totally unexpected 5-1 annihilation of the hun and the day Lubo started on the road to becoming a Celtic great. His nonchalant acceptance after scoring both his goals endeared him to a support who instantly fell in love with the Slovakian magician. Larsson bagged a brace before setting up Mark Burchill for number 5. Sadly it wasn’t the springboard to further success but was a day to be savoured by all Celts.
