A bustling young forward from the Gorton area of Manchester. He had been attending The Manchester College, training to be a panel beater and playing for their academy (affiliated with FC United of Manchester) when he was noticed by scouts and handed a trial with Celtic's youth team in mid October 2008.

An "outstanding" performance against Rangers earned a short term deal and, according to the Manchester Evening News, this was extended to a three year professional contract in February. A couple of substitute appearances for the reserve side were to follow before the season was out.

Despite this, Gardner was thought to be among many U19 players released by the club in May 2009. With the abandonment of the SPL Reserve League, players too old for the U19s faced being in limbo.

Returned to Manchester and fixed up by Flixton FC in the North West Counties League (step 9 on the English pyramid). Subject to the attentions of Oldham Athletic and Crewe Alexandra in January 2010. Joined Crewe on trial on 15 .1.10 and hit the only goal in a reserve game v. Aston Villa 20.1.10. Signed for Crewe 15.2.10. Handed the number 34 shirt and made two sub appearances but freed at the culmination of 2009-10.

Signed for Droylsden FC of the Blue Square North Division for 2010-11.
