Midfielder Hayes joined from Celtic Boys Club in 1997 and spent two years in the youth team. He was released in May 1999 along with 11 other youngsters in a large-scale clearout.

Despite his ability to feature in midfield or up front, Hayes' participation in the BP Youth Cup was restricted to sub appearances in the early rounds. He played in the Glasgow Cup final at Broadwood on 9 May 1999, but Celtic were gubbed 4-0 – perhaps unsurprisingly, given half the team had been notified of their release earlier that week.

Hayes is believed to have stayed on at Celtic Park in a non-playing capacity, namely as assistant kitman to John Clark. He sometimes featured in team photos several years later, during the Strachan regime.

Still a talented player, Hayes started playing for Rutherglen Glencairn Juniors in 2002 after a few years in the juvenile/amateur ranks. He switched to Cumnock Juniors in 2008, then Vale of Clyde a year later.
