Signed from Parkhead Juniors in September 1922 keeper John Hughes made his debut in a 1-0 home league win over Motherwell on 4th October 1922.

“Hughes played well versus Motherwell, better versus Morton, but must be a clinking chap to keep Shaw out.”

John Hughes was primarily a deputy to the great Charlie Shaw but he did oust the regular No 1 from the team for the Rangers game on October 28th 1923 – but Celtic lost 3-1. Losing 4 goals in a 4-1 defeat in Nov 1922 v Ayr signalled the end for him.

John Hughes played a total of five league games for Celtic in season 1922-23, but not again in his remaining seasons at Parkhead.

In his five games he had three shut-outs but in the two other matches he conceded seven goals, so his case for a place ahead of the great Charlie Shaw was not too strong from this short run. In fairness, he played in three 1-0 winning matches (v Motherwell, Morton & Clyde) with all the conceded goals coming against Rangers (3-1 defeat) and Ayr Utd (4-1 defeat). That defeat to Ayr was seen as a shock home result for Celtic, although Ayr were a mid-table side that season.

Charlie Shaw played in all the remaining matches that season so little opportunity for John Hughes to deputise either for injuries.

He was given a single game in season 1923-24 in the Glasgow Charity Cup semi-final, keeping a clean-sheet in a 2-0 win over Queen’s Park. However, Charlie Shaw was given the nod for the final in a 2-1 win over Rangers, so sadly lost John Hughes the chance of a final appearance & a medal regardless of that it was for a lower rated tournament.

For the remainder of his time at Celtic, he spent several spells on loan at various teams. For season 1924-25, it was Peter Shevlin who took over from Charlie Shaw.

He was eventually released in 1925 and would join Alloa in September that year.
